PS Vita vs 3DS

Postby steve82 on Tue Dec 06, 2011 2:48 pm

The 3ds has now sold more in 8 months than the original ds did in 12 months

and with the ps vita being almost 100 quid more than the 3ds Surely this is going to be even more 1 sided than the psp/ds battle

Vita.

Hated the 3DS since its conception and no amount of Zelda games on it can change my mind

Neither. iOS/Android smartphones will beat them both.

However, at least Sony is showing some forward thinking by integrating PlayStation Suite into PlayStation Vita. Nintendo however...

People who want a cutting-edge handheld console with a massive screen?

Well the original DS looked like an absolute dog of a console.

A fair comparison would be with the release of the DSLite

Yep, and people who couldn't care less about playing the latest reboots and rehashes of Nintendo's ever more tired ageing franchises.

PlayStation Suite is something of a double edged sword. Sure, it'll get more games on to the Vita, but by the same token they'll lose exclusivity and many people will end up playing them on Android devices instead.

Obviously Sony can still keep some, if not all, of their first party titles exclusive to Vita, but I doubt that'll be enough to swing it for most people.

I kind of see this not as a vs battle - in the same way as PS3 vs 360, I bought both because I wanted to play the exclusives both offer. In a similar vein I really want a Vita, I already have a 3DS. I've had 3DS since launch and hardly touched it, until a few weeks ago when I got Mario 3D Land and now Mario Kart, both franchises have long been favourites of mine. Vita on the other hand is home to one of my other much-loved franchises, Wipeout. Which clearly will be a technical beast and show off the graphic power of the Vita, that and Uncharted looks pretty awesome too.

Be good to have both in my rucksack anyway - when the battery runs out on one, you can use the other! The only downside of Vita is it is rather expensive if you want the console + games + better memory card (bespoke memory card to the console) and that may hinder it's sales a touch.

When I used one I wasn't too sure of the back touch-panel either, felt a bit odd.

From the video footage I've seen of Uncharted: Golden Abyss the game very much appears to have been designed with PSV in mind, i.e. controls that seem well integrated as opposed to looking like they were bolted on as an afterthought.

WipEout 2048, while not necessarily 'original', certainly looks like a great title to showcase the power of PSV in a way that'll very obviously underline just how much the console blows 3DS out of the water. The game's PS3 integration looks fun too.

As well as sequels to such established franchises I'd hope to see some fresh IP on PSV too that's designed from the ground up with the console's various control options in mind. A couple of the launch window games appear to fit that description.

They both have new IP, and they both have reboots of old and trusted franchises.

Its hardly a surprise as every machine has this mix.

well to be honest we all wanted the psp to do better than the ds. Before the psp launched the ds never stood a chance in our minds did it. the thought of a ps2 in your pocket was mind blowing. never in a million years could some shitty little nintendo handheld compete with something as powerfull as the psp. the fact that the 3ds has sold more in 8 months than the ds did in 12 months and you still get ppl thinking this new psp handheld stands a chance is very funny. all i can say is keep on thinking that.

Why does one have to fail? I never understood the 'one beats the other' arguments.

PS3 hasn't beaten 360 and 360 hasn't beaten PS3 - they both exist together, with Wii in the mix as well with the current largest installed base but now coming to the end of it's lifespan. That's 3 consoles that all managed to do some good numbers.

The same applies to 3DS and Vita - there's are large segments of target audiences that apply to each system who won't be interested in the other and vice-versa.

I want both to succeed because I want both to have great software for my long train journeys. Lack of competition is a bad thing, there should never be a 'winning' console.
