Can i just agree and quote you? because i know your quote will make the magazine

Reading through this thread, and the other C64 vs Spectrum and the other one, this quote applies to both machines. To take that one step further, and state the obvious, great graphics don't maketh the game. So, it makes perfect sense to say, Commodore 64 all the way!

Good use of host hardware and well designed visuals ensure game doth not breaketh.

So, highly detailed visuals on Speccy=fantastic, as long as say in a shoot em up, you don't loose sight of incoming enemy fire.

Murky colours on C64-Not an issue if used wisely to create feeling of say a jungle enviroment.

Use of space bar to jump or fire special weapon....design choice of a multi-toed sloth.

Contra, was mare on C64, then there was Spy Hunter, Green Beret, Renegade, Op.Wolf, Slapfight also i think...and so forth.

Think that's something owners of all formats, past, present and future can agree on.

Another thought to consider, or get riled about depending on your view, I remember guys at school who moved from the Speccy to the c64 but not the other way. It was seen as a step up or an upgrade.

At the time, the ST was often refered to down my way as the 16 Bit machine most likely Spectrum owners would upgrade to, but it was the one most of us C64 owners went for, as it was cheaper the Amiga, but we did miss the SID chip.

The Spectrum owners i knew at the time, seemed to sit out the ST/Amiga war and get back into gaming when consoles were all the rage, few bought a Master system, most went MD route, but never knew of anyone who went from say speccy to C64 as most of us seemed happy with system we had and could play 'rival' format games on others computers, even had friends with an Electron and 1 who's rich dad had a PC!!!!

I went from the Spectrum to the Master System - Megadrive route, but swapped my Megadrive for my friends Amiga 500 after just renting MD games, never regretted the swap, esp since i got my most loved machine of all time along with the *cough* massive disk box full of 'aquired' games!

When the ST/Amiga became affordable enough for us Oiks to afford, most of us had left school, just started further education or jobs, so it seemed like a lot of my Speccy owning friends (and few C64 owners) kinda drifted away from gaming and it was'nt until the hype train started for these high tech consoles coming in from Japan hit, that interest was sparked.

Good few like myself carried on with upgrade path to ST or Amiga, but it took something more to get a good few of us to return to the fold.Same thing happened with 3DO/Jaguar era, lot stayed with MD/Snes until Playstation hit, hype train an all.

I was still at school until 1993, so the first consoles i bought with my first job wages were the CD32 (my upgrade path to AGA with SX1 and disk drive, carried on playing Amiga games for many years later this way) this satisfied me until Sep 1995 when the Playstation came out, i looked at the 3D0 and Neo Geo CD, but they were both £400, the Jaguar didnt have enough games, the Saturn too was £400 at launch, but with lacklustre launch games and only a few months to the PSX came out, so the Amiga kept me going till then, when it launched it wasnt the Sony hype train we all hate nowadays, Sony were fresh, the Playstation was cool to own with Wipeout and its dance tracks, it wasnt until a year into its life and it starting to become mainstream i got turned off a little from it, but the first year of the Playstation was the best memories of that time....i picked up a Saturn in 1997 i think it was, when it dropped to £99 and it all but died off in the UK, Sega Rally, VC, VF2, Worldwide Soccer, that was a great cheap xmas too! Only two years till the Dreamcast!....

The Spectrum didn't have a presence in Australia, so that's a non-issue.

The Commodore 64 has it's place in my hear because it was the best and most memorable Christmas present I ever had, it gave me hundreds, if not thousands of hours of pleasure, gave me a starting point into my career and was also occasionally useful for printing out school essays.

I've neither owned or played either but I'd say C64 as the Spectrums rubber keys scare me!

Don't get a rubber key one then! There are more models with proper keyboards than rubber keys.

One of my earliest memories is playing Hungry Horace on a Spectrum hooked up to a black and white TV. We never had a C64 but I have used a few since then. However nostalgia wins out at the end of the day, and the Speccy takes the crown.

Spectrum:

Rubber keyed version was small enough to allow Pron mags on the desk also. These could be read, well stared at, whilst a game loaded.

Depending on the game possibly enough time to crack one off.
