Science Fiction now Science Fact

Postby Doddsy on Wed Jan 04, 2012 2:42 pm

I was reading Page 19 of retro gamer and it got me thinking of scientific concepts in past cult Movies and Tv shows that are now science fact or at least possible with the level of technology in 2012.

The Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy being the obvious example; we now have electronic books and its possible to update them via the internet. Startrek had handheld communicators. Now everyone has a mobile phone. Bladerunner was a movie that showed a dark future. We already have overpopulated multicultural societies and visiting cities with their neon lights everywhere, brings the reality of the vision closer to home. Old buildings are also now being retro fitted with machinery outside the shells of the building.
Blakes 7 had Orac a super computer that seemed far fetched in 1978 by defeating other super computers (Ultraworld?) but now with viruses this seems more possible and with internet mobile communication it seems believable that it could intercept signals.
1979's The Black Hole had flat screen TV's about the space ship Cygnus and one even kills the Doctor Hans Reinhardt a lesson learn't for owning a 100 inch one!
1984 had big brother watching us now camera's are on nearly every street corner!

So as we continue into 2012 and beyond I'm sure many more examples will be a reality.

You're forgetting Star Trek's sliding doors and stun guns.

It is quite frightening how close we are coming to Orwell's vision of the future - and it's not only cameras everywhere watching us. We are conditioned to believe what we are told in newspapers and on television, language is being compressed (how many people now write as they text on mobiles?), we are monitored when we speak on phones, when we send emails, perhaps even when we access the internet.

Some of it I'm sure is beneficial to us, but it's not as if we have any choice in the matter either way...

The whole "They live" subliminal messages in signs. We are constantly from an early age told whats best to wear/eat/do/watch
yet a few years later we are told the opposite or told there is no extra benefit in doing so yet all the while evian or smithkline beecham rub their hands.
It wasnt until I found out what companies like tesco do with info on your club card points -such as sending you offers on things you buy or alternatiives they suggest you want, or selling your info on to other companies- that you realise how devious/corrupt/money orientated mankind has become.

I experienced the weird joy of someone sending their music from their ipad wirelessly to a speaker in the next room, i was amazed at the possibility considering 10 years ago i was amazed at an mp3 player.

Other things that are now science fact from Star Trek are transparent aluminium and transports(sort of!). The transparent aluminium was featured in Star Trek IV : The Voyage Home(the one with the whales). See the following link :-

Transporters have been developed, but I think it is only parts of light and data information that can be moved around at the moment, not solid matter. See below :-

Interesting posts. Stark Trek Next Generation had touch flat screen technology which we now have.

I guess that if Humans can imagine it. We may take our time getting there but we can make it a reality!
