The thought just struck me that...

NGP - Neo Geo Pocket
NGP - Next Generation Portable (early project codename for what became PlayStation Vita)
NGP - Neo Geo Portable (the current temporary name for this new product)

Aaaaargh!

:? From Kotaku:"The handheld sports a 4.3 inch LCD screen .

Looks as if they are trying to go the PSP/Vita route of having the screen size as key factor, but games would have to be upscaled/streched to fit, would they not? Seen likes of this on PSP (Powerstone etc) and it's not a good look.

Here's a front-on shot for a clearer look at the screen dimensions.

The console certainly looks a fair bit wider (longer) than an iPhone 4/4S and I like the look of how they've integrated those L1/L2/R1/R2 shoulder buttons.

Why does it even have shoulder buttons? The Neo Geo only had four buttons to begin with!

Good question! Maybe the device will be compatible with more than just Neo Geo games.

I'd have thought it would be better of those shoulder buttons were above each other rather than side by side, it may be a problem for those of us with small chunky fingers!

I'd imagine they'd need to be tiny to the point of being impracticable to fit on the edge of a device which looks about as thin as an iPhone 4 if arranged that way.

According to this post on neo-geo.com the console isn't an SNK Playmore product but is being manufactured under license by the same Chinese company that also manufactures bootleg SNES consoles,

Yes, I'm sure a console running 20 year old games which were niche as **** even in their day is going to destroy both of those mainstream machines :D

That console looks like a modded iphone - still IF it is real and you can add roms into it via the SD Card slot and it can handle games such as Blazing Star, KOF 98/99, Metal Slug X, 3,etc then it could potentially be pretty awesome. Although PSP does already do Neo pretty well anyway, it gets cool points for having the Neo logo on it.

Really? I was impressed while reading the list of games how few were already available on the recent Wii compilation. For an obscure, not very well regarded, game Magician Lord seems to get pulled out a lot, mind.

I'd have to look through the list again but I'm fairly sure that at least Nam-1975, Last Resort and League Bowling haven't been included in any previous Neo-Geo compilations.

Last Resort is on SNK Arcade Classics Vol.1. I know because I remember being horrendous at it! Nam 1975 might have been on SNK Arcade Classics 0 which was only released on the PSP in Japan.

I have to agree about the same games being re-released over and over though. After recently taking the plunge into PSN and digital games, I was disappointed that the Neo Geo Station stuff was almost identical to what's already been on compilations and the Virtual Console. The KOF games for example rarely get re-released past '96 and all the big-hitters like The Last Blade are always left out.

It seems to me that SNK launch these services, intending to release their back catalogue in order but then the services fail to generate enough interest and the releases always dry up before the meaty stuff arrives. Wash, rinse and repeat with the next method of digital re-releasing.

The gamnes SNk release o these services don't help their cause. They always aim for one game in each series they do so there is always 1 kof, 1 SS, 1 FF, 1 MS. it is always the same.

Yeah, if they released KOF '98, World Heroes Perfect, Samurai Shodown III/IV, Art of Fighting 3 and one of Real Bout games then it would be much better. The first games in each respective series are still important and not bad games but they've aged enough to put buyers off.

Although with Metal Slug, I don't mind the first one being re-released since it's the best in my opinion. It has been punted back out onto compilations and download services a lot in recent years though.
