GTA III, if only for the map. Just some nice routes to drive, along with a fairly decent story mode that clearly had the gameplay in mind first.

A close second goes to GTA IV, but almost for entirely the opposite reasons. They're two entirely different games, but I love them both.

Vice City all the way. Who can resist committing unspeakable acts whilst driving a pastel blue sports car, wearing a pink suit and listening to Toto's Africa on the car radio. Brilliant.

vice city by a mile for me,the only one that i finished 100%.it had the best atmosphere,music and characters.

I love them all but San Andreas wins for it's immense scope and the improvements over previous games such as being able to shoot fuel tanks on cars, parachute from planes etc. Having said that, Vice City (and its PSP sequel) has the best atmosphere and most memorable city for me.

I really enjoyed the first one the most. I found the 3D ones, while impressive in so many ways controlled like crap. I played the first one more than any other.

While I think Vice City has the best soundtrack, atmosphere, setting and story (after all it is just one big Scarface homage), the gameplay in San Andreas is by far the best the series has to offer. The world seemed more immersive and I enjoyed the cycling and skydiving, not too mention the fact that it was the biggest GTA gameworld. By comparison I thought GTA IV seemed dull and lifeless, and was pretty much the low point of the series for me.

Vice City was brilliant - I loved the whole 80s theme & music, but for some reason I didn't play it through to completion. So, my vote goes to GTA IV. I had so much fun with that game. It has some brilliant characters (Brucie!) and my favourite GTA mission ever - the bank robbery job, "Three Leaf Clover" was epic!

The theming of Vice City was spot on. It for GTA3 what London map pack did for the original, but to a higher level. I find virtually all of the other GTA's to be a bit bland and soulless.

GTA III for me - the first two were a little fiddly for me but this was one of those rare "wow" moments in gaming. I always go back to it if I feel like beating a hooker to death and stealing her money, especially when I can't be bothered to leave the house.

See, I'm the opposite - after I've beat a hooker to death and stolen her money THEN i like to go home and play this.

I have never really liked the GTA games. I ended up choosing Vice city because I did actually play that one for a bit, although the only reason was to see what song came on the radio next.

I think GTA III was the first game in the series that I got absorbed in and played from beginning to end. The only downside to III was that once I'd finished the main story continuing to play felt a bit hollow. But, Vice City was already out. I'd got hold of a PS2, a copy of VC and so I dived straight in. I got about 1/3 of the way into the story and got bored. I think it was a case of GTA overload!

I did play through GTA IV when it was released. I enjoyed it a lot but it didn't grab me like III did.

GTA 3 I perhaps played the most and knew the roads like it was my neighbourhood. Vice City wins it for me overall though. 80's soundtrack and a great city. Just something about it. Never even finished San Andreas though it had everything and opened my ears to hip hop. GTA4 was a massive let down. Over censored and not what it should've been. Looking forward to seeing how 5 turns out now.
