Watches

Postby retrosofer on Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:49 am

It occured to me recently, that for a long time now, ever since smart phones came along, and they (mobile phones) went from brick size to miniture size, the less i started to see people wearing wrist watches. After seeing some in a jewllers shop window a while ago, i thought, i haven't for a long time, at least the last 4 years perhaps that i haven't come across a single person that has had one on their arm.
Does anyone still wear/use them?
Are they now relics of the past or soon to be relics?

Had a similar chat with my dad the other day as he couldnt believe i dont wear a watch, just dont need one, always glance at my phone. Last time i wore a watch was 2000.

Watches are like wearing a tie at work, just old skool, not needed!

I always wear a watch as I very rarely use my mobile phone at all, maybe 5 minutes a week talking & 0 texts.

I still wear a watch, they're still very handy (no pun intended), but then again I don't have a mobile.

A few years ago I got my ex a watch as she didn't have one becuase she had her mobile. I thought her not having a watch was a good window of opportunity to buy her one as I didn't know what else to get her for Christmas. But the response I got was "Well, I suppose I could wear it for work...".

Needless to say I was dumped about 2 months later  / :(

I can't imagine not having a watch. Why would I want to carry a phone around all the time, then have to keep getting it out of my pocket every time I want to see the time or date. Surely, looking at my watch is about 50 times quicker and easier?

It's a nightmare when the battery runs out every year or so, and I spend a few days without it.

It only takes a second or two longer to get a phone out of your pocket ! I carry a phone around with me all the time (ringtone on silent though) just in case my car breaks down, better than trekking down the motorway looking for a phone.

With this being a retro forum, does nobody wear classic watches? I've seriously considered collecting Pop Swatches, but they can be hellishly expensive. Beautifully garish 90s designs though, I love looking at them.

I own two watches at present - a £10 leather strap watch from Argos and a £1 white rubber watch from Primark :)

I have a £60 Fossil watch that I wear when I remember to.
If I could find one of these, which I had as a kid, I would wear it every damned day..

Something of an irony saying that on the Retro Gamer forum :D

I still wear the watch I got bought as a birthday present when I was 16. I like watches, but the nice ones these days are so bloody expensive. I do have fond memories of the one I got bought when I was six wit a built in football LCD game, that was ace. Batteries lasted about a month.

Watches are pretty far down on my list of things to buy (the one above was a birthday present), but I'll probably get a retro watch of some kind one day. Should probably get a slap band to go with it
