video game hunting stories

Postby Lil Chillbil on Tue Feb 28, 2012 3:56 am

I figured as a hardcore nintendo 64 game hunter that I should make a thread where my fellow hunters can share stories of how they found the prize cart.
pm me I'm always up for a multiplayer session for the following games
Gears of war 1 2 3
Call of duty 2 3 4
All of the halos
Call of duty modern warefare 2
Shadowrun

For me, it was this little beauty:-

Image

I'd been trying to track down a copy for about five or six years and had only ever seen one on ebay and in all my years as a Transformers fan I didn't know anyone who owned a copy! I knew people who owned the Playstation version and loose N64 cartridges (which I had), but a boxed N64 copy was pretty much like gold dust because of the fact that it was a Blockbuster rental exclusive and that the packaging for most of the copies were destroyed by the stores as they just didn't need them!

In the end I managed to get this one at the end of last year when TWO turned up on ebay at the same time! Both were boxed and complete, but the cartridge for one of them had Blockbuster stickers all over it (which are nigh-on-impossible to remove) so I went for the best one but it cost me over $200!!

Myself my only real find was a copy of Grandia on the PS1 (I never saw it in the shops) at a non-high street video game retailer in Worcester city centre!

Found most of my rare stuff just by going round loads of car boots and charity shops. The only good story wise is pulling a mint working NES out of the electrical skip at the recycling place i used to work next to. Then again i pulled a stupid amount of working stufff out of that skip.

I was looking for guardian heroes for like two years, but I didn't want to spend the money. But one day I found at a local shitty used game store for 8 bucks. I ran back to my parents in order to get back to the money (Being 14 i had a wallet and no money). And then ran back and bought that censored.

That's how I read this thread as well, hence my story about getting my gaming holy grail.

I've also had an eye on all N64 stuff the last few years, yet I don't really have any epic 'adventures' or hunting stories. I sort of stumbled upon many of them by pure chance, like spotting Donkey Kong 64 with the Expansion Pak in a small-town Gamestation window for just £7.99, or clocking Mystical Ninja 2 for just £22 delivered on Amazon a few months back (the box isn't in great condition, but seeing as the cart on it's own usually goes for much more than that, I consider it a great find).

My favourite was dropping into my nearest Cash Convertors as it had just opened and asking the guy at the counter if they had any retro games. After looking in the back for me, he told me 'no'. Fair enough. Looked at some DVDs and current gen stuff, then as I was leaving he chased me at shouted 'STOP! We've just got these in!'. He shows me mint condition copies of Perfect Dark, Diddy Kong Racing, Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time and - most importantly! - Majora's Mask for only 99p each.

My ultimate find was a complete green label Final Fantasy VII for 25 dollars. The story begins with my birthday rolling around so my best friend Naum takes me to see Apollo 18 ( now my favorite movie) and after that a video game hunting marathon ( my favorite activity ). We head into the first goodwill and Naum starts riffling through the cds while I check out the console rack for a master system. He found a couple games for his dreamcast and while he was checking out I take a look in the case, what do I see a mint copy of the game I have been looking everywhere for the past 1 year. When I saw the price I immediately craped my pants. So as you can understand I picked it up with haste and went home and beat it.

Nothing particularly epic but after 6 months of avid Wonderswan collecting and checking Ebay practically every day, i gave up trying to track down a copy of Final Lap Special. Nowhere indicates this as a rarity but id never seen a copy for sale anywhere so it became a sort of "holy grail" for me.

About a week after i decided to call it quits, bored one night i decide to have a look through a few Ebay page results for typing "Wonderswan" and to my surprise find a mint copy of the game for £20.

Moral of the story: You only find something special when you arent looking :P
I asked for orange. It gave me lemon lime!

This is so true. Also after finding the game you will then notice copies everywhere.

Happened to me with Trinity Universe on PS3. Took me ages to stumble across a copy, now I see it everywhere.

Charity shopping all the way :)

Got a mint sealed US NES game for £1.00 (Mickey Mouse) and also EVO mint for £2.99.

Bootfairs tend to give me cheap games. Any cardboard games tend to be mashed up :(
