The good news is: my wife is having a baby. The bad news is: We live in a small flat and the chances of being able to move in the short term are not good, which means we have to make the best use of the space we have. We currently have two Billy bookcases full of DVDs, CDs and Wii/Gamecube games (as well as, y'know, some books) and frankly they're taking up valuable real-estate. We need to stuff them in a family members loft or garage, but ideally of course we want to keep the discs themselves so we can continue to use them.

I once tried to save space by putting all my discs in one of those big wallet things with all the pockets but that proved a decision that I later regretted (re-buying the discs which became scratched and refused to play cost me an arm and a leg). Is there some kind of storage option which will allow me to store about a thousand discs in a small space but still keep them safe and minimise the risk of them being damaged?

You can use Pc CD slimline Jewel cases which doesn't take that much space.

I feel your pain mate as we had a child 14 months ago (best thing in the world btw) and then sold our 3 bedroom house in Wales and moved to a 2 bedroom flat on Dartmoor which is 1/3 the size of our house.
We considered all the options as have about 500 CDs, 1000 DVDs and hundreds of games but in the end went large plastic with storage boxes from Tesco of all places.
It's a pain when we want to find a film sometimes but the alternative is my daughter hiding things like she has a wont to do...

If its going in a loft those big plastic storage boxes are pretty good, just put some silica pouches in with them and check them once in a while.

Can you not put shelves at height around the rooms (over the doors, right round the whole room)? That's a fair bit of unused real estate, you'd line hundreds along a single shelf. I'm contemplating it for the spare room.

I just just packed up 15 Billy's and a proper bookcase! Lucky me I have a loft. I used Tesco bags for life for DVD's games and proper plastic boxes for CDs - my personal priorites.

I spotted those recently. My only issue is that they seem to use the same plastic wallets that damaged so many of my discs before, just in a dangly arrangement rather than a book sort of thing. Nevertheless I may end up having to go for it - the Discgear holders look boss but for me to get as many as I need may cost me £200-300, which I can't really justify now I have to buy a pram and all that.

I had to dump 50% of my stuff between my parents and my partners parents when I moved in with my partner.

I just keep the mostly used stuff until we move out in February time but this flat is quite small. I manage though, and we don't have a little one yet so!
