Why is it different for celebs and their voicemail?

I'm not saying the newspapers and their contractors shouldn't be investigated for the immoral aspects of these cases, just that the people who's info was accessed invited it and don't warrant any sort of compensation.

If you read my post you'll notice I never stated that celebs should get special treatment for not having the sense to change passwords :P . Also, I agree that they shouldn't get compensation. I was just trying to make the point that the reporters involved have done no less of a crime just because they were able to freely enter mobile phones. Maybe they weren't breaking any laws per se but the immorality of what they did is just as bad.

That really doesn't bother you at all?

The fact that it was Charlotte Church, no. Her age at the time it was being done, yes. That's an exceptional minority of cases with the celebs though.

I'm not defending the journos listening to their messages at all...yes, it's still immoral, yes they should still be prosecuted if proven they went to great lengths and difficulty to do it BUT I'm just saying that I don't really care, no real harm has been done asides from a bit of embarrassment for the celebs...and people who are old enough to know better (the vast majority of them) really should be putting their own passwords and things on stuff as it's all been drummed into everyone enough times.

In a similar way, it completely amazes me how, in the street where I live, there's 3 or 4 unsecured wireless internet connections that I could easily connect to and do what I wanted with. I don't of course, because I've got my own connection but I've passworded it, limited the visibility of my SSID, turned 'access control' on in my router settings so that only devices with specific mac addresses can even connect to the router, etc....basically, everything I can do to secure my network against anybody leeching my internet. Only took me a few minutes and a bit of common sense to do it as well. If you left your front door wide open and somebody walked into your house and took your possessions, would that be wrong? Yes. Could they actually be charged with burglary? No, because there was no forced entry and nothing to stop them from doing it.

EDIT: Yeah Megamixer, I do see what you're saying as well.

The fact that This Morning is featuring a newspaper article about funny exam answers extracted from a series of books I bought TWO YEARS AGO!

Ah, saved me posting a link to it in the 'Today' thread then! Still, it cheered me up no end. Must be a slow news day or something.

I dont have a problem with the success of the cases against NOTW but as most of these 'stars' dont need the money , how about they donate it worthwhile causes.

The fact that Leeds CEX has a HUGE area devoted to pre-owned CDs (in this day and age!), and yet has NO retro games at all.

I'm pretty sure that would still be burglary.

If someones stupid enough to leave their front door wide open and get their stuff nicked they should be arrested for stupidity ! Seriously though i'm sure they would still get nicked for theft

As for the stars getting these big payouts i agree, i dont see why they 'should' give it to charity, most of them have worked hard to get where they are today, does it mean after a certain amount of money you should give most of it to charity ?

It would definitely be theft - defined in s. 1 of the Theft Act 1968 as follows: "A person is guilty of theft if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it; and “thief” and “steal” shall be construed accordingly."

Oh, and s. 9 gives the definition of burglary: basically this revolves around the person entering "as a trespasser" - so I don't think it matters whether the property is locked or unlocked for legal purposes because the burglar would be trespassing in either case. It probably would matter for insurance purposes though!

^^ Fair anough, I was wrong about that then. I honestly thought that if someone was stupid enough to leave their front door open, then they couldn't really do anything about it if somebody walked in and helped themselves to their nice big LCD TV or whatever.

That doesn't mean I have any more sympathy for celebs who don't change the default password on their mobile phone messages though!

As you're the one who's saying "most of these 'stars' dont need the money , how about they donate it worthwhile causes" it's for you to say why you believe they should do such a thing.
