Profound sadness: the buyers remorse thread

Postby SomeScrub on Wed Mar 07, 2012 1:56 pm

I didn't see a thread for this so I thought I would make one. Just a place for talking about purchasing choices game wise (or whatever) that you regretted buying almost instantly or pretty soon after.

The two examples the come to mind right away for me were devil may cry 2 and xenosaga both 0f which I spent 50$ on and were total trash.

Two recent games:

Sonic 4 Ep 1 - bought this on release day without reading any reviews. That was a mistake.

F1 2010 - censored Codemasters for this let down of epic proportions. After years of stagnation while Sony held the license, I was really excited about Codemasters getting their go. They totally dropped the ball. The game was a bug ridded piece of censored. And they never even censored fixed it.

I have to agree about Devil May Cry 2. Never have I tried so hard to like a game that was just so bad. Devoid of challenge and a pale immitation of the original.

KOF XII of course, I imported that game from America and boy was I gutted. No one player content and an unplayable online mode.

To a lesser extent I'd say the recent Space Marine game for the PC as well. It didn't cost me much but its such a bad, glitchy game that I can't bring myself to complete it.

Back in the 80's buying Knight Rider (oh oh !!), Miami Vice (sooooo bad) and Superbowl were shocking moments ! I love american footy and had been following the progress of Superbowl wherever i could with screenshots etc. Looked decent but finally after a huge delay i got my hands on a copy and it was dire. Terrible amount of money wasted on that back then.

Due to that i didnt feel guilty when i copied Oceans games as a huge chunk of them were over hyped tripe. Knight Rider was so so so bad but i think even Miami Vice managed to top that. As a kid saving up for a £7.95 game and then realising a few minutes later how bad it was was a terrible moment !

I used to play Double Dragon in a local arcade, saw the Speccy version, didnt 'think' the graphics were that bad and could live with it, hell i had an imagination. Yet another huge mistake, try as i might this game was just so so so bad. Frustrating, more wasted money!

Back in the day of the Spectrum there were many many games I purchased before looking at a crash review to my eternal shame. Usually conversions of coin-ops I loved such as Nemesis, Jailbreak etc and when the review had been held back by the publisher...

these days info is so available on the internet, it's miles easier to make an informed decision.

A tank game for the speccy

Must have been late 80's

Can't for the life of me remember what it was called

From the box it looked like a tank version of one of the microprose games I loved so much (Gunship, Silent Service, Stealth Bomber etc etc)

I may as well have given a dog a tenner to censored on my spectrum

luckily managed to take it back and swap for something else

In the 80's I'd bought 'Jailbreak' & Enduro Racer on the C64! full price.
What was I was thinking! :?

I actually really liked Xenosaga myself. Whole SERIES though.... not for everyone.

Couldnt stand the first game, Xenogears, at all.

Recently, a terrible purchase for me was the most recent DBZ: Tenkaichi game. The previous three that had that title were excellent.... flying around and dodging and lasers and explosions.... it made me think of games like VOOT. Alot of fun with all three.

THIS one though..... ugh. It's like someone made literally an ENTIRE GAME out of quick-time events. I mean, seriously, there isnt even ONE part of the gameplay that does not involve QTEs.

Others are.... hmm..... most of Capcom's fighting games. I (usually) buy them, and usually am disappointed. UMVC3 is the only exception. Couldnt stand SF4 (or 3 for that matter) or Capcom VS SNK.... bought ALL of those, regretted ALL of them. I'm much more used to Arc's games. Capcom's..... they tend to be poke-fests, whereas I'd rather be hyper-aggressive, being that that's the way I am by default.

Also.... the Wii, and absolutely everything associated with it. I wish I could go back in time and un-buy that horrid thing. That was a big pile of money I never got back. Oh I sold it to Gamestop later on.... for hardly anything.... blech. And the Gamecube, for that matter. Only redeeming feature was PSO.

And as much as I hate to list these..... DDP:DOJ, and ESPGaluda 2. I love shmups, love danmaku types especially, and love Cave, but I CANT STAND either of these games. DOJ is the worst.... probably 70 bucks, and I spent like, all of an hour with it, before tossing it aside permanently.

And ugh, Devil May Cry, yes, I'd grabbed those as well. Bah. Not fond of ANY of them, really. Whole series. More money down the drain.

If only I could stop buying things simply because they are shiny. I dont handle money well.

Kick off on the Gameboy . . . that was horrible. . . . as I walked out, I knew... KNEW I'd made a mistake.

Combat Lynx was probably another on the c64... I wanted to love it... but not sure even if mother could. . . . . I was gutted.

Was it Battle Command?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_Command_%28game%29

If it was I thought coming from Realtime, who had just delivered the astonishing Carrier Command that it would be a classic, played it once I think.

Spending £40 on Victory Boxing for the Saturn only to find out the game was impossible to play and just kept getting knocked out in the first round. Ended up trading it in for something else about a week later and making a big loss

^ Had the same experience with that very same game - upside was I only paid £3, downside is that it's not worth selling!

The Next Tetris - A Tetris game on the Dreamcast, what could possibly go wrong? Everything...
UEFA Challenge (PS1) - Looked good in the previews, and I'd enjoyed Infogrames' previous UEFA Striker. Unfortunately Rage weren't developing this one and it all went to sh1t.

The only two games I've ever bought new and immediately took back once I'd played them.

Quartet on the Speccy. An OK (ish at the time) 4-player run-and-gun arcade game that became a very weak game upon conversion to home machines.

Sonic Unleashed - bought on release day on a spur-of-the-moment decision as it was heavily discounted. A few very rare amazing bits, but otherwise 90% utterly unplayable trash.

Sonic the Hedgehog LCD game by Grandstand - truly dreadful. I'd have been better with off with one of those cheap car-dodging games. Shortly after this I bought a Gameboy.
