Video game TV shows..

Postby jcdentont1000 on Fri Mar 09, 2012 5:22 pm

Do they still have these?!

I fondly remember growing up watching Gamesmaster, and having spent a free afternoon today (my word I'm sad) watching season one of Gamesmaster on YouTube (I've never heard as many thinly veiled censored jokes in my life) it's made me yearn for more. I vaguely remember watching Gamesworld at a friend's house, having been too poor for Sky, and thinking it was rubbish compared to Gamesmaster. Then there was Bad Influence on ITV which had amazing prizes and the quite weird Violet Berlin, but again for me it wasn't a patch on Gamesmaster, even though looking back aged 7 or whatever there is no way I could've understood half of Dominik Diamond's jokes!

More recently I found one on Challenge with some bint with tattoo's in front of a white screen, which seemed very dumbed down and she didn't seem to know what she was on about. No idea of the name! Most interestingly I found one on Sky that I'd never seen before (or since!) it was just loads of 16 bit footage interpersed with some quite sarcastic comments and retro-tastic links and references. Does anyone know what I'm on about?!

You missed Bits and its semi sequel Thumb Bandits (starring our very own Iain Lee).

Bad Influence was my favourite and I liked Bits too (those girls were seriously fit)

The one that has Guru Larry's Retro Corner on it is good.

The only one I know of at the moment is "Access" which is a Sony 10 minute show each week on PSN. Good if you have a PS3 or Vita.

You also forgot one of my favorite behind Gamesmaster which was Cybernet, on Bravo. It wasn't a competition show but a serious show with updates/news/features/review. Before the net exploded, this show was God for all things gaming.

There was 'Movies, Games and Videos' which ran on ITV every weekend for years. Primarily a movie review show, it did feature a games segment each week. As this is pre-internet it was a rare chance to see new games in motion.

TV aren't really interested. There's just not much money in it as it dates fast so can't be rerun often and there's no real market to sell it to other countries. I'm sure Iain will be happy to explain the realities of it from the Thumb Bandits perspective.

Youtube and iTunes are where all the best game coverage happens now, some of it better than what we used to get.

Having said that, what started as the internet download show Consolevania eventually got picked up by BBC Scotland for a couple of series, with some changes to the format and a retitle to Videogaiden, airing from 2005-2008 (with some internet only content again via the BBC website).

Videogaiden, while enjoyable enough, did rather show that the restrictions of a public broadcast can be detrimental. No more Hitler modding consoles. "Gas in yer face!"

I'm sure I seen a gaming program the other night on sky, think it was on the poker channel or something (it had poker news running at the bottom of the screen while it was on?!?!) plus the host had a very Dominik Diamond look about him.... come to think of it I think I might have just dreamt it :?

We have one down here that plays late nightly called 'Ginx TV.' It originates from UK so you guys should find it easy enough. It's a half hour themed review show basically. One night is racers, then sport, then franchises, then they have a retro-ish night, a news and whats new night...
It's okay, a bit hit and miss.

I enjoy the Coin op TV DVDs, lots of enjoyable snippets on these and quick easy watch chunks. Don't follow it online though, just grab the DVDs when they come out.
Do love the DVDs of feature lengths docus- Like King of Kong, Chasing Ghosts, Game Invasion, Get Lamp, etc.
Then there's DVDs of the old Game Room show (old Online review show that was a bit hit and miss), and Starcade, the US game show that is cheesey and dated but fun to watch! :)

Lol, that would be my show, "Guru Larry's Retro Corner". It's on showcase tv, information tv and controversial tv. Problem is they put it all over the place and is usually the second half of another show.

I've got the episodes cut up into individual games on YouTube if that's of any help to you!
