The Xbox curse

Like many 360 users, I've already seen the RROD. But now that this problem seems to have been solved by MS, now my 2nd 360 is doing something new: it went mute!

I had just installed Mass Effect 3 and was about to play. I dug up Kinect and plugged it in, did the update and then, no more sound. I tried everything I could, I contacted Xbox support on Twitter (very quick answer and very efficient by the way) and did everything they said, but the problem seems to come from the console itself and it needs repair.
I was looking for an excuse to buy one of those new Xbox, so here it is, but it'll be my 3rd Xbox in about 5 years...

I was getting ready to type a reply about your scart or HDMI cable being on the fritz, but if they think it's the console at fault then I guess so.

Didn't the Xbox Dashboard have a console hardware test built into it already? I remember seeing one, although it was a few Dashboard updates ago. Maybe it's gone? As I recall it would scan the Xbox's internal hardware and report any problems. Kind of like a diagnostic?


As for me; I've already decided if my out-of-warranty Xbox RROD's I'm going to go for a PS3. Not because the Xbox is crap (it most certainly isn't) but so I can go for all those lovely PS3 exclusives you guys are always bashing on about.

I'm still using my original Xbox Arcade edition (with hard-drive) - I'm in a weird situation, I'm kind of expecting to get the RROD eventually...but I haven't yet. Should I buy a new 360 Elite (£99 in Game sale...) or just keep on living in fear?!

If you've got the set up i suppose you could try outputting through a optical cable to a surround sound see if that sorts it.

I've actually tried the console on two different TVs, with different HDMI cables, with a VGA cable... to no avail.
The PS3 and Wii worked just fine, but not the 360. The only way I managed to get some sound was with the component cable, but the picture was all green and really bad, it looked like an Amstrad screen!

Well, I found a pretty good offer for a new 250 Gb Slim 360, with Forza 3 and Crysis 2. Too bad Crysis 2 is actually a download code, and I already have Forza 3...

If anyone's interested, I'd be happy to swap it for issue 97 of RG (not sure about the number, it was the issue on FF7).

Happened to users when NXE went out, temp.work around back then found:
According to a long thread at the AVForums, several Xbox 360 users are losing all sound after upgrading to the New Xbox Experience. Apparently, the problem only appears in HDMI-connected systems. but there has been one report of someone having the same problem using a SCART connector. Fortunately, there seems to be a fix. • Turn off the Xbox 360. • Remove the hard drive. • Turn on the Xbox 360. • When the Dashboard loads, put the hard drive back. Apparently, the fix is only temporary. If you turn of the Xbox, you will have to receive the process.

My XBOX does this every once in a while, I turn it on and the logo appears with no sound and silence as I navigate the menus, it always sorts itself out after I switch the console off and on, I thought it was just my cheap HDMI lead.

My Xbox RROD'd when I was just about to complete Perfect Dark about a year back, to be fair to Microsoft they had increased the warranty period so I was covered, I sent it off, got it back within a fortnight with a free months Gold live thrown in for the inconvenience. Can't really complain.

My old one muted on me and I had to do that hard drive thing. It worked fine afterwards and never happened again.

The new dashboard can take an age to get going on my 360, that swirly logo sometimes takes a minute or two before I'm finally 'in'.
