I wasn't expecting a free gift either, but nor was I expecting to pay 20% more for the mag.

Yeah, I get it. It's cheaper if you subscribe.
It's a wonder they still sell it in shops, eh?

Yep, it's been there (the link in the mag) since at least 2nd March.

Doddsy wrote:What freebie did retrogamer give us loyal readers who where there supporting the magazine from the start for this 100th issue? A cd remix of Rob Hubbards latest work..no sorry. Ok, how about a conversion of a classic game like Chaos for the Xbox360 / PS3....er no. What we got was a magazine that we already own without the coverdisc and a jack up in price for the privilige of it! :( Disappointing. Whats next? Issue 200 will have Issue 100 added free?

See this just highlights even more how difficult it must be to cater for everyone. I was personally delighted at the free issue #1, literally eyes wide open in shock when it all came through the letterbox, was not expecting that and I probably missed about 40 issues worth of the mag before regularly starting to buy it so had never seen the old style RetroGamer, let alone issue number one! I think having unrealistic expectations (like they should have developed a game for the Xbox360) doesn't really help, where does the money come from to pay for something like an XBOX360 game? I'm sure the fact that most of the writers are freelance and not permanently employed on the mag shows just how much profit there is in this niche area for a magazine. The price hike is obvious, there are very obvious costs associated with printing a magazine even if it is just a reprint, they still have costs to cover. What sort of cover price were you going to accept for a full-blown Xbox360 / ps3 game? I wouldn't even be able to play it due to not owning either.

Yep, I'm stoked. So what I paid a little more, I got issue 1 as well, for an extra quid. You're dead right- you will NEVER please everyone, which is what I posted a couple of pages ago when another suggested you can make a mag that is completely perfect to 100% of readers. You just can't.
Here- Some are complaining about the 'freebie'...some didn't expect a freebie, but when they got one didn't like it due to already having it...and rather than think it was a nice gesture for the many who DIDN'T have issue 1, took it personally as an insult to the 'loyalists since day 1.' Then some didn't like the fact it was an extra quid, some thought if other people really wanted issue 1 they could go on ebay and pay ridiculous prices for it...some felt while they didn't expect a freebie, now they've seen that there is one here with issue 1 they feel they should have got something else...then some aren't happy with the actual issue because it wasn't quite the features they'd wanted...

Good god, talk about damned if you do, damned if you don't. Some people, bluntly, masturbate over misery. FFS, chill the hell out and enjoy the mag! Or not, it's up to you! If you like the issue, that's the main thing. If you don't...well judging by the feedback here you're in a minority. So tough. You want a freebie? You got one, issue one. You don't like that? Sell it, you're bound to at least get the extra ****ing pound back that was such a big deal...

Sorry, my bad. Precisely why I ordered fast the moment it came up- I felt it was not going to be available for long. Proving that the guys did a damn good job with the package for the majority of people...

On the downside, you're subject to the whims of the postman. I've received subscription copies of magazines with a huge crease down the middle, a broken spine and, in one case, ripped pages. I buy it from WH Smith for the simple reason that I can check the magazine's condition before I buy it.

Question : Which earns the publishers of RG the most? A mag off the shelf or a subscription? Yes a subscription guarantees a purchase for 12 months , but do they take aq hit with the profit?
