I'm really up for dragon blaze or gunbird 2 though I was thinking strikers 1945+ as I have it on MVS and would like to play it again. Not sure I'll end up top 5 so it probably won't matter

Ye gods, I thought my absolute hatred for Mame could not POSSIBLY go any higher.

Boy was I ever WRONG.

Unless I find some crazy MAGIC SOLUTION, I'm out if any shmup (and I do mean *all* of them) on Mame is chosen, since the devs are astonishingly incompetent.

It hurts my brain to even THINK about this, but the current version of Mame is EXTREMELY INFERIOR to the one I used to use like 2 or 3 years ago.

This is the one, and ONLY, program that JTK will not work with, and I know it's not THAT program's fault. It's bloody Mame sucking way too hard.

I need rapid-fire to play ANY of these. It's not a personal preference or something, it's a physical necessity.

Mame, being amazingly terrible and useless, wont accept keyboard commands from JTK because.... because DIVISION BY ZERO. Has to be the reason, because anything else is too bloody stupid to comprehend.

And EVERY GODDAMN ARCADE SHMUP EVER is designed without auto-fire in place. And I cant use Wierd-Mame's autofire options, because it's retarded, and would stop me from being able to use charged attacks in these games (where they're very important). Or concentrated shot in any Cave shmup.

I really, REALLY loathe that emulator.

I have to go on a wacky quest for the CORRECT OLDER VERSION before I can make this work.

I don't really use mame so can't comment on versions etc. All I know is when I was setting up
my old mame up yrs ago, it was a nightmare finding compatible Roms to versions of mame. I hear shmupmame is pretty damn good, though not sure if it'll eradicate the issues you have stressed you're having.

Back on topic - this game time sure is dragging now. Want to get playing game #3. We really need to try find a good game this time. Arrow flash was fun chasing the clear but the scoring is too reliant on how you get on in stage 5. Playing back through stages 1-4 everytime was just a drag. I'd like to beat kollision's score and I know I can ;) I just can't face playing it anymore.

I think I have my game nomination ready if I manage to stay in top 5 (not confident).. Anyone started thinking about theirs yet? *coughs* "vert shmups" *coughs* ;)

Since I'm not taking part next game, though, it's not fair of me to nominate. I'll leave you to choose.

Gonna try and beat that score, though.

I don't have much experience with MAME, and the one I use is the shmupMAME version available at the system 16 shmup forums.
It's pretty reliable and allows everything you need to practice.

^ If you get no joy from that Misery, PM me. The version I use is pretty old, I think.

Nailed it down to a choice between a Psikyo title, and something a bit more old-school for NES/MAME...roll on the nominations! :)

No worries, you can still nominate, you never know you might get time to squeeze in a credit here and there. I feel compelled to try top my score now too. Rankings are getting tight up there.

I'll have a go at this shmupmame thing, then.

I cant imagine that it WOULDNT work.

Ah, been awhile since I've had a real go at the Psikyo stuff.

Ah, that shmupmame works pretty well, thankfully.

Been awhile since I'd had a go at Plus.

That game...... is still damn near impossible. Best I can do (without much practice) is getting to the stage 1-4 boss. Whichever one it turns out to be. Argh. I'd forgotten about the screwy random stage order.

The challenge holds my attention though, which is good, because interesting scoring systems are pretty much non-existent in Psikyo games.

EDIT:

Oh yes, this one would be.... "interesting".... for the league, I think.

This one is designed to do exactly one thing: eat your money. By killing you. 1-1 is always easy. 1-2 starts to get kinda obnoxious. 1-3.... the rank goes berserk. There are, if I recall, 7 stages. You have two stocks.... not three.... bombs do NOT clear the screen and often in situations where you need them.... which is almost ALWAYS a wall of blue (really fast) bullets coming at you, the summoned plane/jet/whatever wont appear fast enough to knock the bullets away. And if you get hit just once... just ONCE... you may as well restart, because you're probably totally screwed. Your plane immediately becomes pathetic, and that's AFTER grabbing the powerups that drop from it.

.....all of that is pretty much the usual formula for Psikyo games (aside from the 2 lives things), except this one tends to be.... nastier than most of them.

Pretty sure most psikyo games have second loops too. Not that I would ever reach them anyhow.

Was playing gunbird 2 earlier as now have a 32" Tate set up :) think I might use this permanently for my jap 360 as pretty much all the shmups are verts and I assume have the perspective flip option?

Been playing catch-up all day, I'm not going to do better than this. I still want to leave my nomination to whoever's in 6th at the end, though.
