Atari Jaguar Advice

Postby Jonboy1977 on Sun Mar 18, 2012 4:31 pm

Just decided to give the Atari Jaguar another chance. I have a feeling I am going to regret it and resell what I buy anyway.

I know what games I want so I dont need any advice, but I need clarification on a couple of things.

I paid £41 for a fully refurbished boxed Jaguar with all cables and manual and boxed Dino Dudes and White men can't jump.

Question 1) is that a decent deal ( bear in mind I was not trying to get it on the cheap and dont mind paying a little bit over )

Couple of surprises though, it tuens out it also has a boxed Multitap, and a extra boxed controller still sealed.

Question 2 ) are they worth anything

It also seeems to have an official Scart lead with it, now I seem to remember these being quite hard to find.

Question 3 ) is the scart lead worth much and even if it is, am I better of keeping it for the picture quality.

Thanks guys.

Jagfest and DCRIP probably your best bet to answer the questions, i can kinda answer question 3) though:Jaguar Scart lead will offer far better piccy than the RF lead, so if nothing else i'd hang onto that.

What games you going for? just curious.

Q1: Yes, that's a very nice deal

Q2: A boxed Team Tap Multi-player Adapter won't be worth all that much - maybe in the region of £10-£15 on eBay iirc. Brand new old stock Jag controllers are pretty common so you'd be lucky to get more than a tenner for it on eBay.

Q3: Even used Atari branded official RGB SCART leads tend to go for decent money on eBay these days such is their scarcity. A rough guess would be that it'd fetch a minimum of £20, a likely price of around £25 or maybe even more if a couple of bidders are desperate to snag it. BNIB/sealed ones tend to go for in the region of £35+ these days, iirc. Such is vast improvement it provides over crappy RF I'd recommend you keep it.

Obvius one is AVP, Raiden, Double dragon, and doom.

Tempest for all its plaudits does not interest me.

You do realise Double Dragon V is widely regarded as one of Jag's very worst games, right? It's an abomination! It tends to go for reasonable money on eBay though for 'collection purposes' as there aren't so many of them around.

Looks like your questions have been answered.

You got an amazing deal there, I sold my spare Jaguar not so long back for £60 with Cybermorph and one controller (all loose) which gives you an idea.

The Scart cable is a must for me as RF is so terrible on the Jag.

I am in the process of getting a Jaguar review guide up on my site, I now have all the Jag CD games reviewed (only site to have this) and am now getting cart games up too.

Double Dragon V is a terrible 1-on-1 fighter, it is not a proper Double Dragon game and IMO one of the worst games on the system by far.

TBH most Jag games seem to have a pretty bad Rep.

I am struggling pretty bad to find games of interest to try out in all honesty. I want to build up a few and then when I have a few spend the day with it. Then I will decide whether to keep it or sell it.

You can't be looking too far then. Every show I have been to in the last couple of years the Jag seems to go down better than any other machine. Not just because most people havn't played one but also because it has a ton of exclusive games and people are always shocked by just how good the machine is considering the bad rap it gets. There are a lot of folk here on RG that I have met at shows who are now converted. There are what about 70 odd cartridge games and around 50 odd CD games covering nearly every genre so unless you are mad for baseball games or RPG's then you should be able to find something worth playing. Plus the best thing of all about the Jag is that there are still new games coming out for it on a pretty regular basis.

Fighting: Ultra Vortek, Kasumi Ninja, Fight For Life Beta, Primal Rage, Dragon

Driving: Super Burnout, World Tour Racing, Powerdrive Rally, Atari Karts, Tube

RPG: I already said the Jag is crap for RPG's but there is still Towers 2 and upcoming AO Project

Run & Gun: I don't really call this a seperate genre but there is Hyperforce, Total Carnage and the upcoming Craze and Legion Force Jidai.

Shoot 'em ups: Raiden, Surrounded, Soulstar, Tempest 2000, Missile Command 3D, Defender 2000, Protector, Space War 2000, Zero 5, Protector: SE, Kobayashi Maru, Blue Lightning, Gorf, Asteroids

There are also loads of 3D shooters but I didn't list them.

That enough for you?

I have already said before many times that there isn't any scrolling beat 'em ups.

Seriously, you say the jag is a good system and those are the games you recommend.
