Midway Arcade Treasures

Postby kelp7 on Thu Mar 22, 2012 10:57 am

Having read about this in the free Issue One of RG that came with issue 100 and reading that it came out for the Gamecube (and therefore works on the Wii) I really really want to get my hands on a copy. Looking at Amazon, I'm out of luck, none available. None really on ebay. Is this quite rare? And does anyone on here have a copy that they'd sell? :)

Yeah, they seem to actually contain quite a nice selection of games. I mean, imagine playing Gauntlet on the Wii hehe...

I have all 3 on cube - but they are ntsc only iirc.

Worth having a cube or PS2 for them although 1 and 2 are the better of the 3.

Namco museum is available too - in both territories.

I have all three for both PS2 and Xbox, AND Extended Play for PSP.
I'd say #3 was worth owning for Hydro Thunder alone!

Not sure "spectacular" is a fair description tbh. Slowdown issues, emulation issues with sound, poor menu design, grainy videos, glaring game choice omissions, emulation issues with the speed at which some games play such as with Hard Drivin', dire emulation quality with the likes of STUN Runner, long loading times, some titles being emulated from console releases instead of the arcade originals, frame rate issues, missing sound samples, etc...

At least the Xbox releases remedied some but not all of the above issues.

Own 1+2 on Xbox (superb), along with Extended Play for PSP, was put off buying volume 3 on Xbox for very reasons DCRIP describes, seemed like a half-baked attempt compared to great work done in earlier volumes.

These were the first retro comps I picked up on PS2 and I enjoy them. Are they that rare then? I saw quite a few for Xbox in Gamestation in Swansea and ive clocked a fair few in car boots.

^ Don't think they're rare at all - you'll always see at least one wherever they still sell PS2/Xbox, and they never cost much.

In the end, without a modified Wii (not sure if even that would work) you will need a cube with freeloader or standard PS2 /XBOX.

Surprised by the lack of updates or rereleased versions of these for current gen. I know there are downloads available for some but loads of games in a collection is quite handy.

They're pretty common on Xbox and PS2, though it's harder to find number one on Xbox than it is any of the others (I actually have three spare Xbox copies of MT3, HMV were getting rid of them at 50p a pop several years back!) If they banged all the games onto one collection and resold it on 360 or PS3, I'd buy them again!

All are well worth getting, even the third, though it's by far the worst. It's worth having for Rush 2049 alone, it's really solid (better on XBox, though, almost as cool as the DC version) though as some have said, the emulation on some of the games here seems pretty 'off' - I'm pretty certain Hydro Thunder had a better framerate in the arcade/on the DC???? STUN Runner is also very hard to play, plus seems jerky, though it's still kinda cool to have on in the background. That 4x4 one seems to have a low framerate, too(????)

I'm a bit nerdy like this - are there any online comparisons between the games in these packs and the real things????
