Just a thought but in Mame is it fixed as default difficulty 4? I was wondering if you have the option of playing Easy, Normal, Hard or MVS and whether we should stick to MVS (difficulty 4) or play the Normal mode. These options show up on the AES version. i can switch between the versions as I have a modded universal bios AES. thoughts please?

edit: also how is the scoring looking after stage 1.. im hitting just over 50k on the JAP MVS

Difficulty 4 is default for Mame, so that's what I've been playing on. If something else needs to be the norm, do let me know. Even the Mame one is switchable, by doing....er.... something or other with the system menus.

The scoring system is not tied to the difficulty at all; playing on a harder level does not give you more points. Playing on an easier will of course make it easier to get points, but not because of any scoring changes.

I'm regularly breaking 100k on stage 1, and 300k by the end of 3, provided I dont go to bloody Paris on 2 (Paris being on 2 causes the lowest scoring potential for that run. Dont ask, it's hard to explain how that works.)

But i can't see what you're doing on Stage 1 to gain such a big point bonus??

It's not a hard level and clearing everything i may get 60kish and usually by the end of stage 3 (bonus level) i have just over 200k.. hmmm? strange.

edit: do you get more points for taking out an enemy point blank or for killing them before they fire.. just been messing around and not sure whats going on but scores have improved...

edit2: ok ive hit over 100k on level 1. realised if you collect power ups quickly you receive bigger point awards.

Thus why I mentioned being plastered to the top of the screen for half the damn game.

To clarify, it's not grabbing them fast that does it. It's grabbing them while being as close to the top of the screen as possible. Even just a BIT lower, and the score bonus drops from 10,000 to 4,000. Going down to about 200 near the bottom. And of course the things are often in very risky areas.

There is also a 2000 point bonus for grabbing a "P" powerup when you are at max; and I dont mean the normal max, I mean that funky temporary boosted max. Other than that, killing enemies and destroying boss pieces are what give points. Killing EVERYTHING in a level (aside from the first) is often difficult and risky. The game as a whole has a good risk-reward sort of thing going on.

Definitely taking a break from it for a few days myself. Blasted Psikyo..... I enjoy their games, but they get me stressed out at the same time.

Gonna be a tough cookie to crack for sure. ive made it to Stage 6 without losing a life and ended up on about 300k.. at the same time ive died twice in stage one and hit over 400k..

yeah, same here.

I tend to just remember that crazy bonus copter land is stage 3, and goddamn stupid boat hell is stage 6.

.....ALL of my runs (aside from the "experiment with planes" ones) end on stage 6.

Really hate those damn boats. I'll get them yet.

The difficulty options on the neo geo CD are easy, normal, hard and MVS. Is MVS harder than hard then or somewhere between normal and hard. Bit confusing as the psykio games were always ranked from 1-7 in difficulty with 5 as normal.

IIRC the choice that matches the arcade setting in AES Neo Geo games is "MVS". That should be the same for Neo CDs, I guess.
Regarding difficulty, it's somewhere between Normal and Hard.

Yeah! After missing out last game, I'm back with an average score for starters. Good fun, this one.

400? Without loss of life, and by killing everything and collecting everything and almost all bonuses at 10k each, max close-out score for me on L1 is only 89,900. How you manage 400k??? I must be missing something! Still, pleased with progress so far.

I think he just meant he died twice on stage 1 but carried on and eventually finished with that score.
