 F-me.When i started this thread, the aim was to get some decent debate going, which originally it did, in spades, learnt a lot about a system i owned but really just dabbled in, found some bloody impressive MD stuff which replicated Mode 7 pretty damn well, so all was good.

WAS going to post about wether Factor 5's SNES Indy Jones game which was converted to MD, but never released at retail ever popped up anywhere, as swear Mean Machines reviewd it and the 3D sections in there looked smart, but...clearly stumbled into another slagging match thread.

MODS, if any of you are active on here at present. Please LOCK this thread, it's original purpose has been reached and now it's just nonsense.

Funny. Because it was your friend dreamcastRIP's attempt at misqouting a post in another attempt to have a dig at nintendo that started the whole derailing process.

And what the hell does that have to do with me? If you have issues with him then don't take them out on me.

Just because I happen to have him on my friends list means nothing and is totally irrelevant. Mootown is a friend of mine on Facebook yet I constantly disagree with his views on here

What can I say. I get defensive about Nintendo. look I can't work you out Jag. On one hand you seem a great guy with great advice about Atari and have even put some minor disagreements aside to help me out about the Jaguar. Hence the apology about the athritis ( If I knew beforehand then in no way would I have made a joke about you not being able to use analogue sticks ) Yet you seem be willing to argue till you are blue in the face about Nintendo and other stuff. Like I said before, I admire your passion but it sometimes overflows a bit.

The only thing I argue about is people not stating facts and passing opinions off as facts.

Now can we get this thread back on topic please.

Megadrive: CPU is over twice as fast meaning it can use raw power to pull off pretty much any effect that the SNES can do and is far better suited to games that require speed.

SNES: Easier to do 3D type effects within the limits of Mode 7 and can display a lot more colours on screen.

Both machines have their trade-offs so it comes down to the games really and I myself far prefer the library of the Megadrive because of its shoot 'em ups, beat 'em ups and racing games.

Its hard for me to choose, I love the megadrive, but the snes just edges it for me. Although my opinion has been known to change depending on which games I am playing on at the time. Its the one generation where I can honestly say its hard to pick a favourite.

The 65816 is a more cycle efficient CPU, so is actually rattling through more instructions per second than the 68000 at the speeds they're clocked to in the SNES and Megadrive. The "killer" is memory access, but as far as i'm aware it isn't anywhere near that radical.

the snes could certainly push a lot of sprites around, from memory super smash tv was really busy (need to get the super famicom version of this again). i have super aleste and thats no slouch but it looks like it uses a graphics mode that uses less colours and lower resolution than a lot of other snes games. pop n twinbee had awesome muti part sprite bosses (konami games in general really took advantage of the snes)

stuff like thunder force 4, gunstar heroes and gynoug on the md are awesome in terms of stuff flying all over the show.

it really was dependent on the company making the game, not so much the hardware

my attempt to review each game in my collection using 50 words or less
finished adding neo geo AES games, pc engine, megadrive, psone, super famicom - adding n64 next

I think the hardware is not very important, since the two are quite comparable. The Neo Geo was far more powerful than both but it was extremely expensive (especially the games) and was lacking in the game department.

What matters more is the game library and both have quite decent ones, so it comes down to personal preference. Back then I played with both quite a bit. The Mega Drive got a lot of play because of its great arcade conversions. Nowadays I play more with the SNES since I play the arcade games with MAME.

For jRPG fans (I'm not) the SNES is the exclusive choice. For the genres you mentioned, while both have some great games, I think the Mega Drive has a better selection.

Anyway, irrespectively of the Mega Drive comparison, the SNES, while not very hot in the innovation department, had some nice quirky games like Umihara Kawase.
