Guy claims sexual harassments part of fighting game culture

Rea: That’s really unfortunate [inaudible]...the way it is right now, they want to enjoy fighting games, but they’re so incredibly turned off by [the language].

Bakhtanians: This doesn’t involve me, Jared, I don’t know if you can hear me--this is Aris. This doesn’t really involve me, but if you don’t like onions, you get your sandwich without onions, man. I mean, this is the fighting game community.

Rea: Can I get my Street Fighter without sexual harassment?

Bakhtanians: You can’t. You can’t because they’re one and the same thing. This is a community that’s, you know, 15 or 20 years old, and the sexual harassment is part of a culture, and if you remove that from the fighting game community, it’s not the fighting game community--it’s StarCraft.
There’s nothing wrong with StarCraft if you enjoy it, and there’s nothing wrong with anything about eSports, but why would you want just one flavor of ice cream, you know? There’s eSports for people who like eSports, and there’s fighting games for people who like spicy food and like to have fun. There’s no reason to turn them into the same thing, you know?

Wonder what was going through his mind when he came out with this stuff.

You can’t go to the NBA and say “hey, I like basketball, but I don’t want them to play with a basketball, I want them to play with a football.” It just doesn’t...it doesn’t make sense to have that attitude, you know?

Totally inane.

Obviously, Rea is a ruddy twunt with nothing better to devote his time to, but re: that Bacterium guy, I thought Dom DeLuise was dead - maybe that long-unawaited Cannonball Run sequel has legs after all!! :o

I blame Ivy's impractical clothing polluting the minds of a generation.

Sorry, I meant Bacterium, just watched that film, Until Death, with Jean-Claude Van Damme, got Stephen Rea on the brain right now!

Tbh, I sit in the middle of that argument...there are things of far greater importance to worry/care about than stuff like that, I just find how heated these internet 'debates' get quite absurd!

If you've ever hung around the SRK forum or #Capcom on Efnet where all these gamers hang out you'll see this opinion is shared by nearly everyone in the fighting game scene (except some of the girls, although others just crave the attention even if it's insults). It's like a woman-hating club, they're constantly slagging women and talking about how they'd rape this censored and punch that censored in the mouth. I've been going on IRC and forums since 1995 and these guys are absolutely the worst people I have ever encountered in my life. They are all just like this Bakhtanians guy, or at least strive to be. "Street cred" in this crowd is gained by how macho you can make yourself look online by acting as sexist as possible. They remind me of a pack of dogs.

I take it the sexual harassments they're harping on about are the outrageous proportions and costumes of female characters and not harassment against female players specifically?

I'm wise enough to know that the costumes female characters wear are ludicrous and demeaning, doesn't mean I don't enjoy them though

No they are talking about how it is normal to treat women who play fighting games like censored.

For real? I'd love an opportunity to meet some of those chauvinistic SOB's and show them how to fight for real then.

I don't think there's anything wrong with banter, but for Christ's sake, learn where to draw the line! This is the sort of thing you'd expect from 13 year olds.

Ya know, I play alot of fighting games. I play often. I play at a very high level.

.....and I ABSOLUTELY FREAKING LOATHE the fighting-game community. How much do I loathe them?

I'll put it this way: Compared to them, I LOOOOOOOOOOVE Nintendo. Yeah. THAT much. I dont go to any of those sites that they frequent, lest I lose control and end up smashing stuff again.

This whole thing..... doesnt surprise me. All of the biggest scumbags I've met during my time doing ANY sort of gaming, has ALL been met in relation to THAT horrid community. I mean, geez, they make the shmups.com guys look incredibly rational and pleasant.

Just..... ugh. Every time I think they have hit absolute rock bottom, somebody throws them a nuclear jackhammer.

They act like this ALL THE TIME. And I do mean *all* the time. It's pretty sad, in all honesty. And incredibly irritating. They give gamers in general a bad name.

I had no idea this kinda thing was part of the fighting game community. I joined EventHubs forums briefly but it seemed dull so i didnt stick about too long.
Glad i didnt get folded into it in that case.

Why would you act like that?
I asked for orange. It gave me lemon lime!

They're worse than just that, believe me.

Heaven forbid you're a new player looking for some tips, for instance. "Holier than Thou" indeed. Because, you know, NONE of them were EVER new players. Clearly, they were GODS before they even tried the games.

....no, seriously, they really act like that. *I* try to be friendly and polite to new players and offer tips and suggestions and help them to just have fun. THOSE asshats, well... let's just say that they're "jerks", because I cant think up a way to say what I REALLY mean without using about 30 different swearwords in one sentence.

They act like this in person, too, not just on the Net. I really wish I was making that up.
