Retro Reprints - Issue 100 out of stock?

Postby LLeopardGGecko on Fri Apr 06, 2012 2:31 am

First post here but I've been a Retro Gamer Magazine subscriber for years now. Problem is that I let my subscription lapse right before issue 100 went out (horrible timing!) and I've found that the issue is out of stock for individual order.

So before I start my subscription again I want to make sure I get issue 100. Maybe one of the higher-ups at the magazine could help me: When will this issue be in stock again?

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure that when an issue is out of stock it stays out of stock. Newsagents, etc. may well send back returns to Imagine for issues that didn't sell too well (if RG is sold to them sale or return), but a really popular issue like 100 - which sold out everywhere from what I've heard, is unlikely to have had any of those. :(

Looks like you'll have to hit eBay for a copy...

I was going to buy issue 100 but Smiths sold out before I could get a copy.

As far as I'm aware, Imagine does not back-date subscriptions, so if you take one out now, it'd start with either the next issue or the one after that, depending on when the order is placed. And as Rory says, the magazine has a print run and once all the issues are sold, that's it—they're all gone, for good.

Looking at ebay, the entire print run seems to be for sale there!

Prices are a little over RRP, but if you're a completist its perhaps your best option for now.

I know this not a trading/buying forum, but:

If someone would happen to have an extra copy of issue 100 and should happen to private message me about said issue, I would not be upset in the least.

Spend the extra few quid and get yourself a copy off eBay before they vanish for good and people start asking Issue #1 prices for it (£30 or more).

Here's a BIN for £12.

Having said that, I wonder if Issue #1 prices will now fall like a stone now that it was reprinted. I'm sure there are some people that want an authentic copy, but I'm sure most just want to read the contents.

With the space and value of RG mags in general now I'd just be happy to get my hands on the first e disk.

Pretty sure the emag compilation had a second print run, iirc I missed it first time.

2 or 3 days before issue 101 was in the shops, my local Asda had about 8 copies of issue 100 left.
Will they just get binned?

It depends what deal Imagine has with Asda. In many cases, covers (or partial covers) are removed and returned, and the rest is binned.

Why would they destroy the covers? That doesn't make any sense to me.

If they don't sell, then send them back to Imagine, but don't ruin them, as they can be sold by Imagine as back issues. Ripping the covers means that they are either totally wasted or have to be sent back to a binding company to fix it. Why would you accept them back if they are ripped? That's madness.

They are always people wanting back issues, I'd be really annoyed if I missed one and couldn't get it because the 500 spare copies that Asda had were binned for no good reason.

The shipping costs are too high for a full return, so there's a refund made on unsold copies based on cover returns. Its common practice with most mags though.

I was another one who missed out on issue 100...Was trying to buy one on Ebay, and the guy who was selling it had already sold 6 copies of it, which I think is pretty shocking! He obviously went out on the first day and bought every copy he seen...
