I've got the LE boxset that's a miniture of the front of the ship.
Thats the one I wanted to get, but by the time I had the money, the only price I could find it for was £30 on DVD
So, I gave up and bought the normal 2 disc for £3
About the longer version, it contains more gore, and more character development, apparently. Paramount got a bit nervous when it went for test screenings, as the violence was too much (apparently), so they ordered Anderson to cut the most explicit violence, and most of the backstory, to the 93 minute marvel we have today. But, I doubt we'll ever see it, as it supposedly got lost/was destroyed by fire/someone's dog run off with or something. Shame, really, as I would love to sit through it and see what could have been.
