The retro TV thread

Postby theantmeister on Fri Apr 13, 2012 3:31 pm

No, not shows, actual TVs. I was digging around today and I came across this:

Image

This fine beast is a Telefunken 753. Note the stylish wood grain effect and the futuristic resistive touch controls. I got it as a hand-me-down from my parents, who in turn got it from my grandparents and I basically played everything from the NES till the PS1 on it. It only had the one RF connector and it only did PAL-50. Unfortunately, most of my consoles were NTSC, so playing games on this thing in colour involved using a PAL converter. Man, RF through a PAL converter...I shudder to think what the picture quality was like. Mind you, it probably looked better than what my plasma does to the SNES :(

Anyway, what TV did you use for your retro consoles?

Also, what do you use these days? I'm thinking of buying a CRT TV again. I was considering buying a decent upscaler (like the SLG3000). But, honestly, it is just easier (and cheaper) to buy an old CRT off eBay.

Back in the day my parents had a really nice DeccaColour TV, I'll have to see if I can find a picture of it. Never used that TV for consoles as I didn't have any back then. Did play some Acorn Electron games on it though.

These days I use a 21" Sony Trinitron flat screen CRT, which is the best TV I've owned.

I use a 21" flat screen CRT computer monitor as well, which I also use with my Dreamcast.

I love that Telefunken TV... I'm so jealous. Does it still work?

I'm currently running a Spectrum+ off a Philips TX+ Black and White portable that I used as a child. It sounds stupid but all my childhood I only ever played ZX Spectrum games in black and white, as I wasn't allowed to connect it to the main television. Nowadays colour Spectrum games seem wrong to me, and true nostalgia only reaches me from monochrome. Am I odd?

Anyway more old TV's please. Will try to get a picture up of my TX+... it's quite swanky for a 1970's portable. Even has a one button remote control.

No, sadly. I think it died sometime back in the '90s. Not a bad run, though! I wish my Sony had lasted that long...

I'm still determined to one day own one of the TV's that had a built-in printer for printing Teletext, even though it'd now be completely redundant. Only ever seen it as a prize on Bullseye, never in the wild.

Try as I might I cannot find a picture of the TV I used for my 2600.
It was a white, plastic Portable. Only played black and white and had a small dial on the bottom right to tune the stations and no buttons at all.
This was early 80s....

Put a modded 2600 on a nice new big flat screen TV at a mini Replay thing the other week.

It would only show in black and white on Warlords.

IRONY!
