Home conversions with alternative versions bundled

Postby Zagrebo on Sat Feb 04, 2012 10:34 pm

Like arcade game X? Well, you're clearly best off playing the original coin-guzzler in some form or other aren't you?

Except... sometimes a console/home computer version features all sorts of lovely new things. Good examples are Arcade Advanced for the GBA which features a bunch of old coin-op games like Rush n' Attack and Yie Ar Kung Fu except if you use the Konami Code before playing them you get enhanced versions which aren't, as far as I'm aware, available anywhere else. The Sega Megadrive/Genesis versions of, for example, Mercs and Slap Fight also come with alternative versions which can be selected from the main menu.

Any others?

Megadrive Mercs is bloody awesome.

Here are a few that spring to mind:

Tempest 2000, Missile Command 3D, Breakout 2000, Defender 2000 - Atari Jaguar
You get the arcade original as well as an enhanced version and a totally new up to date version of the game.

Rampage, Xenophobe, Qix, Double Dragon, Rampart, Battlezone 2000 - Atari Lynx
All feature enhancements over the arcade game, in the case of the last one it also has an enhanced version.

Video Olympics, Space War, Combat, Outlaw, Air Sea Battle, Space Invaders - Atari 2600
All feature extra game modes that were not in the even more simple arcade originals.

This month's Retro Gamer also mentions that the Sega Megadrive version of Golden Axe had extra levels that weren't in the original arcade version.

There's a sub-topic here about all those Sega MD/Gen games that were heavily-altered versions of coin-op games without the original version included: Shadow Dancer and (infamously) Toki for example. I'm sure this subject must have come up on these here boards before, can anyone enlighten as to why this happened?

I suppose there's also Gauntlet: The Deeper Dungeons which was an add-on for the home computer versions of the coin-op game, although that didn't come bundled with the original package.

The NES system was the king for doing this, much prefered the versions of

Contra
Bionic Commando
Double Dragon
Double Dragon 2

than the arcade versions

MCD Final Fight had Time Attack Mode.

Dreamcast a good place to find extras:Soul Caliber had extra modes, Virtua Tennis had World Circuit (extra locations, costumes etc), San Francisco Rush 2049 extra modes.
Zombie Revenge had Original Mode:Zombies dropped extras, which could be used in the VM games(Zombie Doubt, Zombie Fishing etc).

A rather obscure one I've just come across: the Bignonia indie conversions of old Commodore 64 games for the Amiga (told you it was obscure) apparently had some extra stuff thrown in. Along with higher resolution graphics they also seem to have put extra levels into their conversions of Donkey Kong and Popeye the C64 "originals" of which were arcade conversions.

Am I right in thinking the Sega Mega 32 version of Virtua Racing had extra tracks?

Purchasers of Street Fighter for the C64 in the UK got two versions, one written in America by Capcom USA (with overlaid but small sprites) and the UK version by Tiertex (with large blocky sprites). Neither played well, but it did represent slightly better value for money.

Rainbow Islands - originally the MD version but then also followed up by re-releases on Saturn/Ps1 - came with 'extra' version included which threw in new enemies and a more random feel , along with tweaked graphics.

Lotus turbo 2 on MD had a hidden game not at all related to the main game (or in fact this topic)
