Improved my score a little on this, playing with the sound off now because those stupid little voices are getting on my nerves!! If I get 500000 by the end of the challenge I'll be happy

First extend at 500k gminty. You can do it!

Edit: for anyone still playing this game and wondering what sort of scores are achievable, these are the best I can find. Not sure if there is another site with such an active High score section.. other than this one of course ;)

Emulation is a big factor in the games chosen, complicated scoring mechanics are a feature of more modern games, many of which will be difficult to emulate. Sonic wings 2 was ok, not great but fun for a few hours. I thought this competition was a bit of fun and an excuse to try out new stuff? I'm sure we've all played DDP before, nothing stopping anyone starting another thread or playing two games at a time. I don't mind joining in but I dont want to have to spend a whole month playing to stand a chance.

That's completely fair. I set up quite a few other shmup threads if i'm playing other games now too. I don't think anyone has or will play any game for a whole month even if the time was still set to that. I seriously think there are a few games out there though, maybe more than a few that you could play for the whole time and not be bored. I could do Ketsui or Futari easily and still score miserably hehe

Anyway game time is only 15 days now. I tend to hammer about 2-4 hours into a game off the bat and then can size up where my personal targets lie for that game. Twinkle Star Sprites i had hit the final stage in the first hour or so.. the score really only matters if you can hold out in the final 2-3 stages and draw them out.. or 1 life the game with over a million points to reap the 100k point bonuses for each life remaining.. it sucks.. it's probably fun for a few credits in 2 player.. i was really hoping it had some deep scoring system.. turns out it has.. nothing to offer except hairloss and headache. Some insane scores submitted for this one though, beyond what i'm willing to aim for.

Edit: Are you not submitting this game FMM? Even a token score for voting rights? There's still 2 places in the points unclaimed and only 5 or so days til game end.

I'm not the least bothered by the voices of Twinkle Star Sprites, it's pretty tame when compared to other Japanese shmups to be honest.
In fact, the whole aesthetics are quite pleasing to me. The music is great (3rd/4th stages are awesome) and the characters are well rounded and varied.
The bad thing for me is the way enemies give in like retards in early stages and how in later stages some enemy attacks are too fast for you to react. Sometimes Mevious is a puss, sometimes he goes berserk FOR APPARENTLY NO REASON.

PS
What do you guys have against the shmups forum?
That sounds like that place is hell on interwebz.

Fortunately, there are only a few specific games that are impossible to emulate. Generally I'm thinking of a few PS2-only shmups, such as Homura.... I'd love THAT game for this, but that one wouldnt work. Or Raiden 4, dont think I've seen an arcade version of that.

As for complicated scoring...... hmmm, actually PLENTY of those games are emulateable without any real trouble. Nearly all of Cave's games, for instance; the big one that I havent been able to manage in an emulator (due to not having found it) is Akai Katana, but all of the others.... emulated just fine.

And dont forget the doujin games. There are SO MANY of those, and quite alot of them are very, very good. Most are free, only certain ones like Crimzon Clover arent (though that one's difficulty might be too restrictive anyway). Many of these would be perfect for something like this, and they're nice and easy to find.

As for the time.... I dont think it's that big of a deal. Everyone has the exact same amount of time to practice at the game, so if you are only given a week..... well, everyone ELSE is also only given a week.

It's because it's a blazing hellhole, mostly.

These people can get into SCREAMING FLAMEWAR ARGUEMENTS over SCANLINES. Think about that for a second. Scanlines. They get. Into. Screaming arguements. OVER SCANLINES. This wasnt a one-time thing, either. I've seen at least 3 screaming scanline arguements. I wish I was making this up.

And you're not a REAL shmup player if you, for instance, dont like DOJ. Or if you DO like certain modes in other games; ugh, I remember the DERP around there when Deathsmiles 2 came out. They were fine with the simple arcade mode (though they'd whine and moan the whole way) but HEAVEN FORBID anyone actually praise X-mode. It's so BAAAAAAAAAAAAAD, how can you call yourself a shmup fan, WE BANISH YOU WITH THE FORCE OF A THOUSAND SUNS!!!!!1111 Ok, they didnt do that last part, but they did the rest of it. Not at me, mind you, I didnt actually POST during any of this, I just watched the sorrow.

I mean, I complain about other forums at times.... like the Minecraft forums.... but NONE of them compare to that one and it's sheer nastiness.

nah...
every forum is like that to some extent
furthermore, it's a specialized forum about a niche genre, so discussions or heated arguments on stuff such as scanlines, bullet colors or hitboxes are bound to happen
i personally don't care about most of these subjects, but while they do seem too detailed or useless to most people it's interesting to know that people can be passionate to the point of discussing them

now derailing into insults and mockery?
online douchebags are everywhere

Generally I agree with you, but that forum....

....let's just say that the asshats-per-square-inch number is a great deal higher on there than on most forums. I wont touch the place with a 2000 foot pole. (no, seriously, I'm reluctant to even go look at the guides on there, let alone anything else)

And I say this after having spent extensive time at the Minecraft forum, which is well known for jackassery. Only the fighting-game community comes close. Very..... very..... close.

Anyway, I like to think THIS forum is a good example of proof that not all forums are like that.

Bah, had a full compliment of lives until i faced-off with Mevious, and lost the lot. Have no idea how you are all scoring so very highly. Can't get into the swing of chaining - always non-stop shooting, taking out too many grebes, preventing chains. Harumpf!

Good improved scores guys.

@sputryk. The chaining is pointless its all luck tbh. I just shot the living censored out of everything. Like I said before, It's all about the 500k & 1 mill point extends, and dragging out the last few stages to score big with getting the all clear with as many lives as possible for 100k per life extra bonuses. Some of the other guys whos scores are higher might say otherwise but there's not a lot to the chaining imo.

@kollision. The shmups forum is good for news, checking out scores and strategy but as a general forum it's rather hostile. Every thread seems to become a barrage of abuse over the smallest of things, it becomes tedious to read a topic. You are right though, a lot of forums have their share of that from time to time. Even this one.

Er.... is it just me, or do we have people actually playing DIFFERENT MODES with this one?

Trying the game out, story and character are entirely different modes.... If the scoring potential is truly equal between the two, I'll be really surprised (because that pretty much NEVER happens in most shmups).
