Next gen, who would you most like to see fail?

Postby crusto on Tue May 01, 2012 1:47 pm

If it were to happen, one manufacturer bowing out of the console wars after ballsing it up in the next gen, who would you rather it happen to? Give your reasoning.

For me, if I had to see one go, it would have to be Sony. Largely due to some of the liberties they have taken during this gen with their loyal customers.

The claims of the power of the PS3 and the 'fake' game footage that went with them.
The extrortionate cost of the PS3 to begin with.
The withdrawal of backward compatibility, basically so they could charge customers again via psn.
PSN in general
The non european release of the passport system for the Vita.
Releasing new yet unneeded memory cards for the Vita and the rip off prices that come with them.
Making me change email addresses, passwords, get new bank cards etc etc due to their poor online security.

I'll second that and add:

Took away the ability to install another OS.
Idiotic EULA that prohibits americans from joining a class action suit.

They also sold me a crappy rear projection TV with a known fault and then screwed all non-US customers out of an extended warranty.

Sony's stuff is overpriced garbage and I can't wait till they're out of business.

I did enjoy reading this on Kotaku.

The comments as well as the commenters' ages and professions were:
"Previously, it (Sony) was great, but now the sun is setting somewhat." (36 year-old company employee)
"The hardware features are good, but they sometimes break." (23 year-old female sales clerk)
"The prices seem high." (23 year-old part-timer)
"Sony, what is it?" (19 year-old college student)
"An incompetent electronics maker." (23 year-old part-timer)
"None of its new products grab me. There's no excitement." (22 year-old job hunter)

And this is in Japan!

They certainly have a lot to make up for. I wouldn't want to see them fail though. I love my Vita too much for that.

No, I don't really either. But it is nice that they're learning a little humility.

Sony - for all the reasons stated and more.

They have become so arrogant its unreal and really need putting back in their place.

Nintendo.
They continue to release one pointless innovation after another and games that offer nothing new to their genre.
On top of that, all attempts of advertising the aforementioned tat is done in a way that is neither clever, engaging nor exciting and simply sucks up to the West's pathetic love of Celebrities.
In short, they suck and need to stop wasting their time trying to be groundbreaking...

Sony - Just for treating Europe so bad and for getting all those import shops shut. Oh hell i could write a list a mile long. Next gen machine off of them, no chance in hell.

I wouldn't like to see any fail, if one of them were to fail though it would be funniest to be Nintendo, just to see the hysterical reaction of the Nintendo fanboys.

Another vote for Sony, I own their three home consoles and a PSP but don't think I'll ever buy anything else by them (although a new Oddworld game would probably break that resolve).

That said I don't want any company to fail.

Sadly have to agree on Sony for the arrogance - but to be quite frank I really dont think anyone wants a company to fail.

Did anybody WANT Sega to fail? No we just wanted them to stop risking so much on word of mouth and plough some money into getting feedback from gamers. Dreamcast could have flown , with more marketing and support.

Sony have become lazy and show too much disregard for the people who give them money. Simple - stop paying them.Move elsewhere.

As with most things in life , if no brand gives you loyalty , give it none back.

reading this:

and Nintendo failing might be closer than people realise.

Yeah I saw that and it's certainly interesting, but is it actually a huge amount based on their total value? I'm sure I read somewhere that in the grand scheme of things it's the equivalent of someone on £20,000 losing 100 quid: annoying, but hardly something that would make you destitute.
There's certainly a story there though, I just think it's a little sensationalist. Oh and before the children start, I'm not a Nintendo fanboy (although I certainly admire their products). If anything I'm a Sega fanboy.

I guess the real question though is will any of them fail quite so spectacularly as Atari Inc. That was one hell of a short and fast ride.

I tried out a Vita for the first time the other week and I've wanted one ever since. And thanks to my backlog of RG mags and a few other things I now have nearly £350 sat in my pay pal account which is just begging to be spent on one. But I cant justify spending it on a vita, unless I get a job soon. Although I do turn 35 next week....

One loss and people think the apocalypse is happening... what about the multiple losses in the gaming operations for Microsoft and Sony? Oh what, yeah people overlook that because the rest of the business props it up. Nintendo still have billions and billions in reserve, I don't think Nintendo will disappear due to a lack of money, it would be because of something else.
Lie with passion and be forever damned...

Not really sure that one year at a loss is the end of the line. These are hard financial times and lets face it , most people have buried their heads / souls so far up @pples A#se there is little room for profit for anyone else.

Be interested to see like for like comparisons with the other companies.

Besides which Im sure everyone is waiting for the Wii-u re-naming as Dreamcast 2 (sponsored by Sega)
