What do you want from the next generation of consoles?

- Less focus on games consoles as media hubs or at least having a cheaper version available that just plays the games.

This is when I lost interest in consoles. After the original XBOX I lost my love for new consoles.

Bring back dedicated gaming hardware, and nothing else.

Funny enough this is one of the things that has put be off the 360 somewhat, the crap dashboard, advertisments, social network widgets, and all the video apps. All these seem to be first and formost before the games themselves.

I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want from the next gen

1. Overly Expensive Hardware.
2. Too few units available on release day.
3. Badly designed units that get re-released a year later looking smarter and more streamlined.
4. Too few sortware titles available on release.
5. Software too expensive on release.
6. Any peripherals (e.g cables, pads etc) extremely over-priced.
7. Games that don't really look very much different to those of the current generation.
8. Hardware that overheats far too quickly and easily causing catastrophic mother board failure and costing the company that made the consoles millions and millions of pounds to replace everyones broken property.
9. Poor, outdated online services that take several months to really get in their stride.
10. A console that sounds like a small generator in my front room and uses so much power that the rooms lighting flickers when both are used at the same time.

As long as I get a few of the above 10 points i will be a happy, if rather cynical, man.

- No launch DLC or petty 'Capcom-style' DLC
- Better reliability
- Less focus on games consoles as media hubs or at least having a cheaper version available that just plays the games.
- No more of that retailer-exclusive content b0llocks
- Don't have Ltd Editions/steelbooks for every friggin' game released - there's nothing special about them anymore!
- Less generic sequels

Obviously the above list is like wishing to win the lottery five weeks in a row - never gonna happen - but that's why I have retro consoles/games from the days when gaming was more 'pure'.

Agree with all of this besides the steelbooks. I don't care about using the console for Facebook or adding apps to it, the only thing I want my 360 for is games and watching films. DLC is no longer about adding value to games, but a way of cynically extracting more money from people. Lack of physical media would be nothing short of a disaster

I want physical media, and I don't want DRM. The pre-owned market has opened up the chance to try games I wouldn't otherwise take a punt in, and then garner enough interest to buy similar games brand new. It's also brilliant for struggling families at Christmas time, who just can't afford to buy "new" for their kids all the time. Basically, I think it helps keep gaming as broad and accessible a hobby as it currently is.

I agree with TheNewMonkey on Action Replay codes and cheats, they could always add a bit of fun to a game back in the day, when you could fiddle around with them to discover new secrets.

I'd also like to see region free consoles. There are loads of Japanese only games for this generation on the Wii I'd like to try but can't.
