even with a lot of things that are considered creative/interesting, you still have some gobs*ite greasy pole climbing a*sehole telling you how to do it better.

I love my job, sorry!

no need to apologise, looks like you do something worthwhile....i imagine its very satisfying.

so apart from sscott..... and using my highly developed reckoning skills, everybody else hates their jobs.

For a living?
Contract IT consultant specialising in virtualisation (VMWare)

Do you enjoy it?
I love working with VMWare, I think it's an amazing product but I'm currently on a massive security upgrade project which is utter bobbins

Is the money any good?
Actually a huge amount of money, but somehow I'm still always skint :?

Are you glad you chose it as a career?
I wanted to be in IT since I first used an an Apple II back in the early 80's, still glad to be in IT many years later (just not on my current contract)

What would you do instead?

Probably an electronics engineer, or maybe the military.

For a living?
A Property & Infrastructure Planner in the Telecoms industry. In short I plan where equipment is installed and arrange building work with contractors where required.

Do you enjoy it?
Yeah, it's such a varied job, and I love the fact it isn't desk-only; travelling around a bit definitely breaks up the week. I get to meet a lot of people, and also enjoy using AutoCAD.

Is the money any good?
I can't complain, it's above the national average. More would be nice though!

Are you glad you chose it as a career?
Definitely. Although I did almost join the RAF when I was younger, I sometimes wonder what that would have been like.

What would you do instead?
Similar sort of project management or consultancy work, or a draughtsperson perhaps.

For a living?
Camera Technician for Fountain Studios (ITV's X Factor, Britains got Talent, The Cube etc)

Do you enjoy it?
Athmosphere is nice when rehearsing and live shows, but hours and co-workers I don't like.

Is the money any good?
Overtime on weekends is good, but Being away from family and fiance 30 hours on the weekend, isn't great.

Are you glad you chose it as a career?
Only because I studied it, its why Im here, but I would choose any other profession in an instant.

What would you do instead?

For a living?
Unemployed

Do you enjoy it?
Not really although i do get plenty of time to play games

Is the money any good?
Nope. Don't get any benefits as i stupidly locked money i was saving for a house into a ISA which puts me over the limit for any help. Apart from that get some very occasional warehouse work but not alot

Are you glad you chose it as a career?
Can't say it was the best career choice. I used to have a very well paid job as a Landfill Gas Engineer but it was stresfull as hell, very long hours and had a boss i didn't get on with from day one who then stiched me up good and proper forcing me to hand my resignation in

What would you do instead?

You know what i haven't got a clue what i want to do.

Haha, I was thinking the same thing.

The general pattern emerging is that most people have not 'chosen' their line of work, having taken their jobs to tidy them over whilst they worked out how to achieve what they really wanted, only to then find themselves in a situation of comfort/convenience/doldrums from which there is no escape!

It also shows that you can't really tell anything about a person from what job they do. I find it funny when I get asked at social gatherings, "So, what do you do?" - as if me telling them what I do for a living gives them any clue about my personality! So, when I get asked this at weddings, birthdays and what not, I usually say something like "I draw symmetrical patterns in the condensation that builds on the shower door", or "I write warnings inside copies of Gideon's bibles whenever I stay in hotels". So much better than just saying "I do x for a living" and have them reply "Ah, right, cool".

Damn straight! I've stopped responding to the "What do you do?" question, it's all about "What are you into?" or "What do you like to do?" - gives a better series of answers that way.

Meanwhile, got the first bit of job satisfaction in years today when I got a "Well done, that's the way I'd've done it" from the boss.

Just a shelf stacker at the local Co-operative supermarket. Hours are good, gives me enough money to do practically anything i want, work with some friendly people. Not too keen on my manager though.

Ever since i left college ive had no idea what i actually want to do. My main problem is that i lack the drive to pursue anything else and i dont know what i want to "be". I was only supposed to be there temporarily but nearly 3 years and ive still got no idea! Cant complain too much though when theres over 1 million unemployed and people working crappier jobs than mine to scrape by.

You're not just a shelf stacker.

Its an important role in the business without which they couldn't function. It may not require years of training, but its probably more relevant to the average shopper than the position of CEO. People shouldn't downplay jobs like this.

I know exactly how that feels, I did very much the same for a few years, it was easy to be lulled into staying put. I didn't really have a clue what to do with myself, and working where I did was comfortable. The pay wasn't great but it kept me in beer. I had friends of the same age who worked with me, and we had a cracking social but I wasn't happy. I eventually cracked and just handed in my notice, I was owed about 2 months holiday, so I took it, handed in my uniform and was gone.
I forced the issue, signed up with a temp agency to keep a few pennies rolling in and started looking around seriously for a new start. I also worked as a motorbike courier for a while and that was Ok until I had another big accident which wrote my bike off. Inspiration hit me whilst lying on a mates sofa with my worldly possessions in a carrier bag and I saw an advert for the RAF. Being the suggestible sort, I hopped on the next train to my nearest AFCO and started looking into it.
14 years later, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. :)

I'm not suggesting joining up by any means, just that sometimes you have to force yourself out of a rut and just go for it.

Out of curiosity, What are your hours and pay?

I've always thought that stacking shelfs would be a sweet little job. :D

I'd happily do it for a living.
