How did Ultimeate Mega Drive collection warrant 98%?

Postby retrojc on Mon May 14, 2012 7:43 pm

Really?

How can a game with no online leaderboards, or co-op play gain 98%?

Then we have to go into how no Pal artwork was included which is just cost-cutting.

Some of the games on there may be some of the best the Mega Drive has, but on a modern console these games need to have modern functionality, and for this game to score 98% you've kind of got to question the reviewers marks. I know, some of these game on here are near 100%, but even so when I play Ultimate Mega Drie collection, I'm just playing Mame, with a new skin.

Hardly 98%

Three years late, you tart. For the love of God, don't show this poster the Super Mario Galaxy 2 review.

 - a review is a review, scores don#t change over time, at leats I hope they don't. I just don't think the game was worth 98%.

I mean, that makes it in RG's eyes one of the very best games of all time.

I think that it recieved 98% is immaterial: that it recieved a high score which indicates how good it is should be the focus! It has it's flaws, but in my opinion those are superficial rather than in any way game-breaking.

"Ultimeate" aside  ...

Would you still have been so disappointed if hadn't already played said illegal ROMs via MAME?

Is spelling really that much of an issue for you? I've clearly spelt it correctly in other places, just a type error.

Don't think you can get half of those games on Mame. You're also assuming i have Mame installed. You're overlooking the comparison I made, and instead tried to turn it around that i'm wrong due to my 'supposed' illegal doings. I have every game on this Ultimate Mega Drive Collection, bar two, in a physical format.

I'm a retro gamer. I like to have at least 3 years between me, and said game. No smart arse, it does not take 3 years to make something retro.

The only flaw it had was that there was no Volume 2

It is a bit late for feedback - unless the RG score was used in marketing and you feel it influenced your purchasing decision?

I don't have the review to hand, but seem to remember it got such a high score for the number of games included, the added Achievements and the bonus features including videos. At the time RG obviously felt it was worth their readers investing in it, and now at bargain prices surely it represents even greater value?

The fact it contains some of the best games around to play on a disc for a low amount of cash makes it worth a very high score. They play perfectly and have added features.

Plus you cannot compare it to what is available on emulation because emulation is not retail.

It is like saying Halo Reach is not worth £40 because I can download it for free.

On the front of the case it says "98% Retro Gamer" - that didn't sell it to me, the false assumption there would be online co-op did - i know I should have done my research, then with a 98% score, you've got to expect it.

Why can i not compare this to emulation/Mame when USMD is emulating all the games itself? All I did say was that it is 'like' playing Mame with a different skin, which it very much is. That is where i stopped the comparison. It was not a comparison of a games worth, or the availability of it being free. This has nothing to do with the games being free to download.

I also, said that
Some of the games on there may be some of the best the Mega Drive has
but
on a modern console these games need to have modern functionality

They do not have modern functionality - well online co-op.

Did any compilations have online play when it came out? Pretty sure they didn't. At the time it was the best possible compilation around so it got the best score. Simples.

The best maybe however you're saying that this compilation is one of the best games of all time - that is just not true. Clearly the reviewer only compared it to other compilations and not with the games available on shelves/arcade; modern day gaming is centered around an online experience, and this game did not cater to that. Without online co-op it's in no way a 98% game. I guess this is just a conflict of opinions. to me its 85%. With online play, leaderboards, pal artwork then yes it would be worth 98%, and one of the best games of all time.

Oh, and Namco Museum came out in 2008, and has online play. Though, it isn't the best compilation in my opinion, but very enjoyable.

How much work would be needed for online co-op on a title containing 40 odd games?
