Space Holiday wrote:Personally I preferred it when you couldn't get event Pokémon via Wi-Fi connection, as it made them so much more rarer, which is what made them so desirable. Nowadays you can get yourself a Mew, a Celebi or a Deoxys, or even all three in the space of a few hours if you use the Serebii Wi-Fi chat well. In recent years, when I download these rare Pokémon onto my DS they just don't seem so cool anymore, because you know everyone who has Pokémon Black or White and a Wi-Fi connection has them too, whereas when you went to an event you knew you were one of much less. When I got Jirachi on Ruby using my friends Pokémon channel disc I was absolutely thrilled! Back in the GBA games Nintendo really promoted the social aspect of Pokémon. It was really great!

I find myself unable to attend events though, and as I was unable to download the special items on all the pre B&W DS titles as I had no internet access with it I therefore missed out. This is just my opportunity to get them to then send them on to each subsequent game. I have no love for using any of the event pokemon. I have my favourites!

I agree the whole online trading aspect has ruined Pokemon to a certain extent. On the other hand we were REALLY getting shafted in the UK in terms of actual events. I didn't even know there WERE any events here because they were either so far away, or just poorly promoted. There are alternatives to download though, for give-away 'events'. Jirachi coming with Pokemon Channel, and the e-reader type stuff, boat ticket to the Deoxys island etc were a great way to add that special something.

All this talk about Legendaries is making me think of one of the most fateful dates in Pokemon history, which was in April 2003.

A user turned up on GameFAQs with a sequence of things to do which could let people catch their very own Mew at Level 7 on Red, Blue & Yellow. Naturally, people were skeptical at first, but within hours it got confirmed. Now you'll be able to view countless videos of it being done on Youtube.

Before long people had learned how to manipulate the glitch to gain any Pokemon at all from the first generation - allowing people to complete their pokedexes without cheat cartridges or trading.

Someone just posted an animated promo to the new Pokémon game up on YouTube. It was pretty awesome if I say so myself!

April 2003? No wonder I didn't know about it before then.

I didn't really believe my friend when he told me, but now I know. Always leave the dude with the Sandshrew alone in Cerulean City now so I can go back later. :)

noobish hat wrote:Um, not necessarily. Nintendo's 'event-give-aways' are largely online now. If you checked regularly on the official HG/SS website for example, they had days when they gave away legendary Pokemon. That's how I got Mew (about 15 years too late for any playground kudos, but whatever). I also got Jirachi from a give-away on the site too, as I recall. Not sure how you'd go about getting them now though. Perhaps they will start cycling through them again for owners of Black and White etc? Another good reason they should reboot and start again for a new generation of players - get rid of all that baggage.

Well I've missed the recent ones since Diamond was last version I bought. Even in that game there were loads of legendaries you couldn't get without special items so I just gave up in the end. I did get Jirachi by completing Pokemon Channel, transferring it to a GBA pak then migrating it to the DS game.

Mew was available in Emerald via a special downloadable ticket through the wi-fi adaptor I think. You could use it on the ship to go to a secret island and capture it.

Celebi could be had through the Japanese Pokemon Coloseum on Gamcube since some copies come with a bonus disc which allows you to get it.

Deoxys is the only one I ever cheated to get. The cheat cart broke right after that if I remember rightly

Like you say, it has been improved with the free downloads these days but back then it was strange to have a target that most people could never meet, especially here in the UK where you might have 2 events on in the whole country. Useless for a kids too because parents aren't going to drive you hundreds of miles just to unlock a Pokemon.

Whilst I am a little older and that wouldn't have been a problem, driving MYSELF miles is stupid. I don't believe in games I can't complete if I don't get somewhere else, it's stupid!

However that's no longer an issue, as I am now only missing 3 event pokemon, and I should get those at some point.

On a side note the Joltik breeding is going well.... I have well over 15 of them now and they're coming out quite nicely!

Are you trying to get specific egg moves?

Nah, I'm not fussed on moves, that's easy enough to do anyway. I'm trying to get one with a specific nature and characteristic set to allow for certain stats that suit that particular pokemon to be higher. In particular with Joltik I want it to be naive so it has a higher speed stat but a lower special defence stat (being the type it is, I believe more physical moves will be used on it.) Secondly I want a Highly Curious or Mischievous characteristic which will enable it a higher special attack stat growth (as it learns more special attacks then physical that I will ultimately be using)

And this is just one bloody pokemon!

To be honest, I've never found Pokemon to be a particularly deep game in terms of combat and stats etc. I mean it can be, but I've found that brute force and a little attention to type advantage is all it takes to beat everyone and everything in the game. You can spend ages EV training and stuff, but outside of link up battles with similarly-minded players, I've never seen any reason to. I find the collecting to be much more interesting.

I agree, although online battles require a lot of strategy over brute force, for some reason.
