Looks fine to me, sit with that in your lap, your hands nearer the top. You won't need to hold the whole thing, the base will rest on your lap hence the high position for the sticks.

You don't want buttons above the sticks, you end up with PSP control layout issues then (the analogue nub beingin the wrong place for most people).

The Vita sort of is. The analogue nubs are miles too low. The rest is fine.

The analogues are not in the right position and as a result your thumbs ache after not a long time of use. They are also too small, the 4 face buttons have been made smaller and don't feel right, and as a result of holding the machine in a position that allows you to use the analogues, when or if you want to use the touch pad on the back you must adjust your holding position to reach it properly so it is definitely awkward to hold. The 3ds on the other hand feels perfect and fits in the hand nicely.
The square is a great shape, and one that is criminally underused in modern game design. In the push to ever more granular, chaotic environments, games have lost sight of the simple pleasures of right angles and straight lines.

Yep, even PS Vita's designer, Shuhei Yoshida, has admitted as much. I forget his exact words but he commented some time ago that the layout/positioning of PS Vita's controls was less than ideal and that he was already working on improving things for the console's first hardware revision.

^Thats a shame, the console could really use a FPS title on day 1 to get the hardcore crowd buzzing.

According to Gearbox the Wii U version of Aliens Colonial Marines will be the definitive version, vastly superior when it comes to graphics. That's quite exciting.

I fail to see how you came to that conclusion based on what was said.

I'm referring to interviews on IGN, can't be bothered to link them  but Randy the CEO and two other senior figures reiterated their excitement over the power the Wii U has 'under the bonnet'

I read the same sort of thing in Nintendo Gamer when they spoke to the Gearbox devs. The guys behind Assassins Creed III and Darksiders 2 were also pretty excited by the sounds of things.

If this proves to be the case, and assuming Unreal Engine 4 works fine with 'PS4' and next-gen Xbox, then it could well prove a real hammer blow to the quality of third-party support for Wii U. A world in which Sony and Microsoft's next-gen consoles utilise Unreal Engine 4 with Nintendo's system left spluttering along with the old Unreal Engine 3. Hardly surprising though to be fair as this sort of thing was always likely to happen.

What state exactly is this console at? I remember when it was first announced with that impressive looking vid it seemed like power wise it'd be right up there. But recent readings seem to suggest it'll only be on a par with this gen, meaning it'll be left behind when Microsoft and Sony throw out their new machines. :? :?

Well all is meant to be revealed at E3 from what I've read. It has to be anyway because I'm sure it'll be out this year. The Wii is near enough dead anyway and Nintendo won't want to have just the 3DS in the run-up to Christmas.

I really don't think the power is a huge issue as long as the console can deliver quality HD gaming. The main failing of the Wii is the 480p output which makes it look much worse on a HDTV than it actually is. Of course it can't meet the PS3 or 360 in terms of power but when you see games running through Dolphin it doesn't matter.

I'd be a little surprised if the Wii-U did support Unreal 4, to be honest. It's graphics hardware is already a four year old PC solution, and with the first Unreal 4 games not likely to arrive before 2014 it'll be hopelessly antiquated by then. Rather, Nintendo are looking at a couple of years at most of it being the best machine on the market and that's still more than the Wii had.

Anyway, weren't Epic talking about machines with 20+ cores as their target platform? That sort of kit won't be coming cheap, even in a couple of years time, so anyone hoping to support Unreal 4 on a console from the off had better have their wallets handy.
