RG IRC Channel or Chat Room?!

Postby roberthazelby on Sun Oct 08, 2006 11:01 am

Afternoon all,

I was wondering if someone with the knowledge would fancy setting up an IRC channel (or some sort of chat room) for us RG forumites?

It's nice to read people's posts on here, but I reckon it'd be a good laugh if we could get a chat room or something similar up and running.

Just think - we could get abused by Dudley in real time! ;)

What dya reckon?

I could set one up on Quakenet if you like.

That's be great.

Would it be permanent? In other words, would the channel still be there if you logged off?

I say "go for it!", and post the details.

There used to be one on RetrObsession that lots of us used.

Died a death though - shame really, we had some great chats on there :(

Maybe SPARKY could open it up to everyone?????

Yeah, you get a bot to hold the channel for you, which can't be killed or deopped.

I'll set it up when I get home and post details later.

Efnet for preference but I'll probably drop in elsewhere, just not as often.

Ok, so #retrogamer is up on irc.quakenet.org at the moment. I need to wait a little while longer to request an L bot, and 3 other people need to be in the channel. I have got 3 cgi clones in there at the moment, so hopefully they will be sufficient.

If you've never used IRC before, I suggest downloading mIRC (http://www.mirc.com) and entering by connecting to irc.quakenet.org (which should be on the list) then typing /join #retrogamer. Alternatively, if you can find an open java client (such as http://www.onlinegaminghub.net/cgi-bin/chat/irc.cgi), you can connect from there.

What are you stuck on Sir. C?

I'm having some issues a) with getting the L bot at the moment because the 'requirements are not met' and b) it's proving difficult to keep these cgi clients online. In this case, some people need to join and stay for a bit :D

I just tried the Java link and got this:

[18:21] *** Welcome to CGI:IRC 0.5.2
[18:21] *** Looking up b0rk.uk.quakenet.org
[18:21] *** Connecting to b0rk.uk.quakenet.org [195.68.221.111] port 8080
[18:21] -b0rk.uk.quakenet.org- *** Looking up your hostname
[18:21] -b0rk.uk.quakenet.org- *** Found your hostname, cached
[18:21] -b0rk.uk.quakenet.org- *** Checking Ident
[18:21] *** Connection abuse... probably trojans..
[18:21] *** Closing Link necronom by b0rk.uk.quakenet.org (G-lined)
[18:21] *** Disconnected from IRC

I used IRC a couple of times on my old PC, but I've never got round to putting mIRC on my new one, so I can't try that at the moment.

Ok, try http://pjirc.viper007bond.com/index.php.

Again, I would only suggest using CGI/Java apps as an alternative to a regular client (or if you're at work ;P)

It's a chat client, nothing much more to say about it. Check the mIRC site for more info.

On the most basic level?

Like an MSN messenger chat with multiple people.

Ah, text chatting. Did that about 5 years ago and assumed it had been surpassed by now.

Away for a couple of days, but will give it a go later in the week.
