Game Profile:
Christmas '89 saw my brother and I end our almost perpetual childhood feud for long enough to pool our 'good boy' credits and get the old folks to get us a Master System with Out Run and Shinobi. As a surprise the folks got us Golvellius too.
Golvellius was weird and neither my kid brother nor I figured out at the first attempt that by holding down the fire button the sword swipe became more powerful. Then after getting through the first side scrolling tunnel we got dumped in an over head viewed desert where we had to talk to people. We got bored and chose to spend our time as Joe Musashi instead. Golvellius only got one play that Christmas and didn't leave the box again for six months.
Roll on six months. The summer holidays of ’90 were the stuff of legend, Italia 90 was on the television, England had qualified and I gave Golvellius a second chance. The two are now and forever knotted together in my memory.
I kept my hand drawn Golvellius maps in my Panini sticker book. I got the boots that allowed me to walk on water shortly before the Cameroon game - what a day! But tragedy struck - before the game against Germany I had my little green head caved in by the penultimate boss Haidee – this was a bad omen. To this day I feel as though I let England down by not beating that boss – if I had only waited and collected enough potions we would have beaten Germany!
The only way to wipe away the disappointment was to collect those potions and clock Golvellius which is exactly what I did whilst the rest of the family watched probably the worst football final ever.
I play Golvellius again every now and then, I’ve never recaptured the feelings from summer ’90 but it is still a good game.
