Released to compete with EA Sports FIFA series, ISS was regarded as one of the best 16 bit football games ever made. The game was released shortly after the 1994 world cup to capitalise on footballs popularity.
The game features 26 international squads, each with their own playing style and tactics. Although the game does not feature real players, several of the stars of the time have very distintive likenesses to certain players in the game.
Game modes on offer are the customary exhibition match and penalty shootout, along with season mode and tournmant. Plus a training mode tests various skills such as dribbling and shooting against the clock. But the game also features a unique scenario mode in which players join a match already in progress and have the remainder of the game to win. They vary in difficulty with some being easy and simply require hanging onto the lead you started with, where as some require at least two goals with only a short time remaining.
The game is played with a side on view, giving it a nice arcade feel, and boasts an excellent control scheme which is simple to pick up but requires some practice for some of the more elaberate moves available. There are three pitches to play on and three different weather conditions which force you to change your playing style.
Followed by the even more popular International Superstar Soccer Deluxe, which features more teams and game options, this is the game which started the ball rolling (pun very much intended!) for Konami to eventually lead to their Pro Evolution series.
