Final Fantasy VI

Game Profile:

Final Fantasy VI (which was retitled and sold in the US as Final Fantasy III) appeared in Japan for the SNES in 1994 and for years to come, it was the last game on a Nintendo console until FF Crystal Chronicles was released for the GameCube in 2003. FFVI was later released on the PlayStation in 1999 and finally on the GameBoy Advance in 2007.

Every new Final Fantasy game improved the preceding game on a certain level, and part six was no exception: the character sprites were now so cutely animated that they were able to express feelings, new summons called "Espers" played a big role and could be assigned to characters to teach them new abilites and there were no submarines or boats controllable this time, only airships but those could now travel 360 degrees AND up and down, instead of simply going on one level and in only four directions. And if you managed to get through the game, you witnessed a stunning 20-minute showdown never before seen.

Players were able to choose from a wide range of characters (14 in total) which could now be swapped out any time in the game. Each character had a special ability and your party was even more customizable by the use of so called relics. Each character could use up to two relics, enabling them to increase their abilites. The game also featured a great, nasty bad guy called Kefka who had no supernatural power behind him and wasn't out for seeking revenge but who simply was evil and bad to the bone.

One of the many memorable moments in FFVI is the moment where you had to split up your party into groups and maneuvre them almost simultaneously through a dungeon, assisting each other. The lovable opera scene also was one of those unforgettable moments. Added to that was a great storyline with some really stunning surprises like the crash of the big airship which split your group of renegades, scattered them all over and let you explore a whole new world.

Of course all the lovable things from the previous games were there: the cute Chocobos, the returning character Cid (who had nothing to with airships this time) and of course a great memorable soundtrack from master Nobuo Uematsu.Final Fantasy VI is an extraordinary adventure with a thrilling storyline and charming characters and a great goodbye for the SNES console.

Nice review! I recently bought a barely used Dreamcast just for the homebrewed SNES emulation but I'd swap it all for a SNES and a true copy of this game. A total masterpiece in design, plot, characters, music, complexity - I could go on. My first experience of Squaresoft was Final Fantasy VII so I was expecting an inferior and technically-dull RPG but it's blown me away and I'm slowly loving this game over anything newer. Kupo!

This game is my all time fave,I imported back in the 90's after reading a Review in super play Magazine, Well worth Ł80 then, that High Rez Games charged for it. I must have played it at least 50 times since then. so much depth and great characters.
