"Ironman Stewarts" Super Off Road
Leland Corporation didnt make many games. In fact they hardly made any. But one title of their's that was a regular in most arcades in the late 80's and early 90's was "Ironman Ivan Stewarts" Super Off Road.
One reason for the games popularity was thanks to Atari's Super Sprint which had hit arcades some three years earlier and had instantly acheived cult status with its fast, flowing races and rather elaberate steering technique.
Super Off Road borrowed certain aspects of Atari's racer and put the game into a stadium environment where four trucks battle it out for their share of the race's prize money, which can be spent on various upgrades to your truck to improve things such as top speed, tires and shocks. But the most important thing on offer are the nitro's, which deliver a quick burst of speed. and when used correctly can send you flying past opponents.
Track wise, there's plenty of variety with tight twisting corners where you can barge your way through the field and some long straights where the all important nitros can easily change the course of a race. Plus each track is littered with its fair share of jumps, obstacles and water hazards. Adding to the fast play is the steering wheel that doesnt seem to have any centre point, meaning it can be spun frantically to pull of some 180 degree turns.
The single player mode is excellent, with a good variety of computer AI but with the three player mode, this game offers some classic multiplayer racing!
