Game Profile:
Bored of the usual Fifa and ISS games released on the PlayStation, then I recommend Viva Football as a great alternative for all football lovers.
Released in 1998 this game allows you to replay any world cup with any team that competed in the competition, want to take England to Glory in the 1990 World Cup, now you have your chance. The roster was hugely impressive as well, allowing you to add players in the squad's that were not originally included at the time.
Graphically this game looks a little 'Raw' compared to other games released at the time, but the game play is superb with fast flowing football action.
Now a quick word of caution the control layout is a little fiddly and the free-kick / corner control system is a very similar to a Golf Game swing meter, this can be a little erratic and cause some interesting results. The usual problem also occurs that once you have found a certain way to score it can be abused against all opposition on all difficulties.
The main thing that sticks in my memory is the atmosphere that this game has, unlike other football games, the players actually communicate with you, phrase like 'Through Ball', 'Man-On; can be heard from your team mates, impressively the CPU controlled teams also do the same in their Native language.
In conclusion this was an atmospheric and engrossing football game for the time it was released. Nothing was better than Spanking the 1990 West German team with the 1966 England World Cup Heroes.
