Final Fight Guy

Game Profile:

The Console Wars are over as I knew them. Nintendo and Sega no longer matter. Now sados are far to be busy arguing whether the PS3 or the 360 is more anal, but their debates are as pointless and ours were, because when it all comes down to it, Sega had the better version of Mortal Kombat and Final Fight. The SNES version of Final Fight sucked for a varied number of reasons. It was probably the only beat ‘em up around that was only 1 player. It was shorter than most - they chopped out a whole level and a popular boss. And with Rolento went half the animations and most of the enemies. The biggest complaint it seemed, or at least to Capcom, was that it only had two playable characters – professional schmuck Cody and professional awesome Mike Haggar. Guy, whom arcade goers often favoured cos he was fast and a ninja, was nowhere to be found.* So in a strange, half-arsed and faintly amusing move, Capcom released Final Fight Guy. Their method for fixing all the above problems was to replace Cody with Guy and add some new power-ups. That was it. No two player mode, no Rolento just Guy, and now no Cody, so there was still only two characters to choose from. It wasn’t even like they did it for the money, it was only a rental outside of Japan and only in America if you rented at Blockbuster. Final Fight Guy is just odd. I still say it’s better than the original SNES version though because, well, it doesn’t have Cody in it. Cody is about the worst design Capcom has turned out with his boring haircut, white t-shirt and Levis**. And when you consider this means he’s going up against children’s scribbles like Julie...err Guile and DeeJay, that’s quite an achievement.

*To add insult to injury, Guy actually appeared on the U.S. box art for the SNES Final Fight!

**If you think it was an unnamed brand of jean and not Levi, you clearly haven’t played the new Bionic Commando.

A nice and devious sense of misdirection in the opening to your review. We're led down the same well-trodden path of the self-absorbed "console fanboys are silly" strutting and preening, only for you then to suddenly shove us into the bushes with the declaration that, rather than droning on about how subjective opinion makes everything equal etc. etc. etc., one version was definitely better. A startling sensation to get us hooked onto the rest of the review! :)
