Robotron: 2084

Game Profile:

Play Robotron: 2084 for just a few minutes and you’ll immediately become entranced by its eye-catching visuals, excellent use of sound, and fast, responsive controls. Play Robotron for 30 minutes and your arms are starting to ache, the sweat is profusely pouring from your brow and the on-screen enemies are beginning to blend into a dizzying kaleidoscope of colours – but you’re still playing and can’t seem to release your grip on its dual joysticks. Play Robotron for 24 years (although not in one go) and it finally becomes obvious why it constantly appears in our Desert Island Disks section (nine times to date). It’s quite possibly one of the most balanced games ever made, and even today it constantly appears on various compilations and services such as Xbox Live Arcade.

Eugene Jarvis once told me in an interview that the original concept for the game had you trying to steer the game’s many enemies into the numerous electrodes that could be found on each level. Fortunately, Jarvis had a change of heart and decided that killing things with lasers would be a lot more fun. He wasn’t wrong and Robotron went on to enthral gamers everywhere.

Taking part in single-screen arenas, each level is deceptively simple, as it requires you to do little more than blast everything on the screen, while rescuing stranded humans. You start to realise that you’re going to need more than simple reflexes in order to achieve the highest score. Rescuing humans is the key to this, as constantly saving people without losing a life will cause your score to shoot up considerably. Robotron’s many different enemies show surprising levels of intelligence for the time and after a few stages you’ll find yourself in a desperate fight against their overwhelming numbers, proving that Jarvis’ creation is certainly not a game for the faint of heart. Don’t be fooled by its simple looks and gaudy sound effects, Robotron IS quite simply one of the greatest games ever conceived and should be experienced by everyone.

Robotron is the only game in my personal Top 10 list that I never played when it was originally in the arcades. For years I heard people raving about how great it was, but having only played emulated versions I didn’t get the appeal at all. That all changed when I made my MAME arcade cabinet and finally played the game with two joysticks as nature intended! While the game gets horrendously difficult very quickly, the perfect controls and precise collision detection mean that when you inevitably die, you never feel cheated and just curse yourself for doing something stupid, put in another credit and have "one more go". For those of you that love Geometry Wars on the XBOX 360 or Wii, you owe it to yourselves to experience the madness that inspired that game!

I always thought this game is over rated maybe I just don't get it but aren't Arcade games supposed to give you an easy ride for the first few levels to hook you? For me, there is too much going on, the gameplay too fast and repetitive for my liking. The people you were trying save, die without giving you the chance to save them, enemies appear right next to you spewing about a million bullets and the over responsive controls means you end up colliding with an enemy escaping. Give me Smash TV to play anyday it was a better game graphically, sonically and gameplay wise - at least you knew what was going on!

You see CasioKid, that is actually part of its appeal. It's just so nigh-on unforgiving and challenging, that it taunts you in every manner possible for a videogame to do so, you can't but help get back on the bike and have another attempt. And another... just beating certain waves is part of the joy itself.

All the Williams games were great challenging your mind and your hand-eye co-ordination. Robotron is probably the best, Defender a very close second. Another Williams game I love is Blaster.

Wow. This game was the primary reason for me about buyng an Hot Rod Se joystick and setting up m.a.m.e. on my pc. I'm 43 and started playing with pong. My personal golden arcade age stops at 1986. This is absolutely the coolest game I ever played and the one that gave me back so much fun. I'm looking for an original one on ebay...that would my dream. I think Jarvis was the best arcade games designer ever.
