Long before Sonic and Mario became best buddies and started prancing around together at the world’s Olympic venues, the idea of a crossover between the two was a hot prospect. Who wouldn’t want to see the most iconic stars of the 16-bit era team up – or better yet, face off?
As it turns out, probably anyone who had the unfortunate experience of playing this dodgy knockoff. It appropriates the level designs and graphics of Super Mario Bros (as featured in the SNES compilation Super Mario All-Stars), then crudely shoves Sonic into the game instead. The game actually looks and sounds surprisingly pretty, but good lord is it ever a mechanical mess. Stiff movement and poor jumping make it something to avoid as though your life depended on it.
