Lemmings 2: The Tribes wasn’t nearly as widely released as its older sibling, which appeared on pretty much every format under the sun. However, it did make the journey to two formats that we’d never played until this year – Sega’s Master System and Game Gear. Both versions were developed by Spidersoft in 1994 and were ready for release, even being reviewed well in Sega Power. However, both releases were cancelled amid declining software sales for the 8-bit machines and went undiscovered until last weekend, when developer Matt Taylor released the ROM images on the Sega 8-bit site SMS Power.
If you’re not familiar with Lemmings 2, the sequel to the hit puzzle game originally arrived on the Amiga in 1993 before being ported to a variety of consoles and computers. The game featured a vastly expanded range of commands and centred around tribes of lemmings, each with their own distinct sets of skills.
