What could you do with Mario Maker?

If you’re excited about Nintendo’s upcoming Wii U game Mario Maker, you’re not alone – this is the first time Nintendo has given players the chance to create their own stages for the company’s iconic mascot to take on. But for technically inclined players, the ability to do this has been available for years through ROM hacking, so we thought we’d take a look at some existing mods to give you an idea of what you’ll be able to do with Nintendo’s official editor when it arrives in 2015.

For sadistic people that love to torture their friends, Kaizo Mario offers some utterly devilish inspiration. The extremely difficult stages presented in this mod have given rise to an entire subgenre of Mario mods, as devious hackers try to outdo one another with the most fiendish stages imaginable.

More artistic players might choose to create an Auto-Mario stage, in which the portly plumber moves from platform to platform without any player input, creating a mesmerising demonstration.

But some people just want to make more really great Mario stages, like those they enjoyed on the NES and SNES, and for that we can’t blame them. With that in mind, it’s worth looking at some of the great user-created stages out there – we particularly like Bowser Rampages Again.

If you’re familiar with Mario mods, why not share your favourites in the comments below?
