Worms Is 19 Years Old!

5,710 views 0 comments

worms2It’s been 19 years since Team 17’s most famous series hit the shelves, and the irreconcilable invertebrates have been bombing the hell out of one another the whole time. It all started with Andy Davidson’s entry into an Amiga Format coding competition, titled Total Wormage, and though he didn’t win the game impressed Team 17 enough to take the project on. The game caught on quickly, thanks to an addictive multiplayer mode that allowed you to blow up friends in a variety of exceedingly violent and often rather funny ways.

Over the years, the series has seen a number of sequels that took it in different directions. Worms Armageddon remains a very popular entry in the series, while Worms World Party took the series online. Worms 3D added an extra dimension in which to move the belligerent creatures, and its sequel Worms Forts: Under Siege moved the series towards themed instalments – in this case, medieval.

If you’re looking to find out more, you can pick up a digital edition of Retro Gamer issue 41 on iTunes to see our complete lowdown on this fantastic series. If you’re not, well, don’t mind that grenade-shaped thing behind you…
