Two buttons and up. Thats literally it. Two sodding buttons and up on the control pad.

Like the first Track & Field, you mash the two buttons as fast as you can to run and then press up to jump (well, on 100 metres anyway). Cramp sets in easy on T & F. Very easily, in fact. I couldn't do anymore after the 100 metres (which i done twice and still came third both times!!!). I looked ike a demented leper whilst playing it, hunched over the SP, slamming my fingers down with a face that a gorilla would even have a hard time loving. But, thats part and parcel to playing this game. It is addictive though. A pain in the arse, but addictive.
