I love Toy Story. It is my favourite film of all-time. From watching it as a small kid I have always had a place in my heart for it and it’s video-games no matter how good or bad. So in 2001 when Toy Story Racer was released I was perplexed to say the least. I thought “How can they make a racing game based on Toy Story? and how good will it be?” Well when I got home my questions were answered.
Toy Story Racer is as expected a racing game based on the film Toy Story. Starting out with only a few of the film’s character’s it’s you’re job to win races and grand-prix to not only unlock all the twelve characters but also the various film themed levels. I always love the levels in racing games and in Toy Story Racer some of my favourite racing game levels are here. I love the construction of the levels especially the mall, Pizza Planet and Andy’s House. Along with this as with a lot of racing games the game has a variety of film-themed power-ups giving the game even more personality and making it even more fun. I especially like the Pixar ball as my favourite power-up.
The game has some brilliant controls and I have to say they are some of the best racing game controls I have ever played with. The graphics, colours, sounds and music mimmick the film perfectly and really help make this a “Toy Story” game, not a cheap clone of Mario Kart. The difficulty level is just right too. It isn’t too hard like F-Zero and isn’t too easy making it a fun challenge to play.
To conclude, Toy Story Racer like the film it’s based on, is brilliant. It has everything the film has and more. Iconic characters, original level design, fantastic controls and perfect gameplay make it have a special place in my heart like the film and other Toy Story games. It was released for the Gameboy Colour as well as the Playstation and it is a game I would highly recommend adding to your collections.
