Brian the Lion was a highly-polished side-scrolling platform from the ever-reliable Psygnosis.
The graphics were well above par for the period: brightly coloured and quite cute. The gameplay was standard platform stuff. It's main flaw was that due to the close camera angle, when jumping, you were normally landing blind.
Special mention must go to the shoot'em up bonus levels. At the time I remember they seemed just as good as Project X/R-type.
Special mention number 2 goes to SNES fans, who always used to say “only a SNES can do Mode 7”. However, the scaling world map on Brian the Lion made them think otherwise. Recollection of this fact reminds me how little my friends and I knew about computers…
