With pirates more popular than ever – thanks to a certain movie series – I thought it would be a good time to take a look at Acclaim’s Cutthroat Island movie tie-in.
The odds weren’t stacked very well in Cutthroat Island’s favour prior to playing. Acclaim churned out some horrid licensed games back in the day and if memory serves the Mega Drive and SNES versions received a mauling and ended up being a Woolworths exclusive. God only knows why I remember that.
But behold: this GameGear version (which was never released outside of the US) is surprisingly slick and polished. The visuals are nicely styled, the animation is fluid and the combat is remindful of Prince of Persia’s swordfight shenanigans. There are lots of moves to master and every enemy poses a sizable threat. If you don’t get to grips with blocking at the right time you’ll soon be a dead man.
There’s a little bit of variety too – as soon as the second level you’re thrown into a cart and tasked with jumping over logs and whatnot.
Not a classic game by any extent, but it’s certainly a game that’s hard to dislike.
