In the N64-era, Mario and his friend were getting hired for several other games than platforming only. Mario did have its first Golf game on the NES, but this was his first 3D-appearance along with all his friends.
In this game you can play with any of the (unlockable) Nintendo-characters on several Nintendo/Mario-themed golf courses. Mario Golf is also very easy to play (also known as a "pick up and play" game) as it makes golf very simple, because it does away with many of the complicated real-life aspects of the sport that are found in games like EA's Tiger Woods-franchise.
