Format reviewed: Game Boy

The wildly successful Game Boy got its own version of Contra, and it’s a surprisingly good one.
Though the game takes some fairly obvious inspiration from the preceeding Super Contra, including the reappearence of over-the-head view stages, it’s an entirely original game with all-new levels set in such well-loved locations as a city harbour, jungle and alien nest.
Some sensible changes were made for the format: enemy bullets travel slightly slower – a real boon for players on the original Game Boy with its blurry screen – and there are fewer enemies on-screen at once, making the game overall much easier than before. That’s not to say it lacks challenge however!
NB: The Japanese title was simply ‘Contra’ but the Western title is often used here to distinguish the two.
