Follow up to the hugely popular Pokeomon Red & Blue Versions (and also Green in Japan only).
In the original television series, the main charachter Ash is followed by his faithful Pikachu, however in the original games he wasn't. Possibly as a result of requests, the later Yellow version added this as a special feature as it donned the title "Special Pikachu Edition".
Other than this added feature, there is little difference between this and the original two. Slightly revamped battle graphics and more pokemon availablr to catch are the only noticeable changes at first although other changes are apparent when played on a Game Boy Color or Advance consoles where it is apparent form the start up video where its much more colourful, after all, it was released very close to the release of the Game Boy Color.
Despite being very similar to the Red & Blue versions, it became the fastest selling handheld game of all time when it was released in the USA. The cartridge game sold over 600,000 copies in its first week and more than one million copies in its first fortnight, remaining the top selling handheld game for many weeks. For selling one million in its first two weeks it was given the honour of a place the Guiness Book of World Records in 2001.
There is an extra feature which is less well known. Surfing Pikachu is hidden in Pokémon Stadium for the Nintendo 64. Once Pikachu has learnt surf, upon travelling to a small house at the northern beach of Route 19 that wasn't in Pokémon Blue and Red,a sufing Pikachu mini game can be accessed.
