One of the best known shooters for the amiga had to be Project X, no doubt a great game but very hard for most people. It also had to compete with R-Type 2, Apidya and Agony.

Upon loading the techno music starts up and the menu greets you. Your options include rookie or arcade mode. In rookie mode you get the first couple of levels which are apparently easier. You also have a choice of 3 ships, faster or better weapons etc. There are 5 levels to get through plus bonus stages. You start in space, then onto the planets surface and finally into the planet itself.

There is no in-game music but it is atmospheric. You will be told of what to expect as in attack waves, asteroid fields, what power up you can collect. Destroying attack waves leaves power ups to pick up. A bar along the bottom highlights the selected weapon and how much more you can build this weapon up. Weapons include missiles, plasma, magma and sideshot. There are other aliens you will come across that take many hits to destroy, some are quite large let alone the end of level guardians. When you reach these your weapons cut out for a second as some music kicks in. Watch their attack pattern, find the weakness and just keep shooting. Manage to destroy the boss and you get to go on a bonus run. This is just about steering your craft through tunnels and collecting six bonus icons. In doing so you get an extra life.

Project X has arcade quality graphics which are very smooth. There is no doubt it is very hard but it's not impossible. With this you do get value for money. Simply put, you will either love it or hate it.
